After reinstalling windows xp pro and all original software included with the laptop, both usb ports and bluetooth conection stop working. Windows says everything "is working properly" (?). I think it could be those ports are off in BIOS, but I do not know certainly. I can charge devices conected to usb ports, though windows do not detect them when are plug in, hence ports are actualy installed but not active.
    What can I do ?
    Thanks for any help.

Your feeling re the BIOS could well be correct. Most have a setup option to enable or disable USB controllers or ports. Get into your BIOS (or read your motherboard manual if you have one) and go thro the menus until you find the appropriate place. WINDOWS 'working properly' response can be fairly useless, as I don't believe it does anything like a full check - I think it simply reads a status signal.

    though...

Well, actually I neither believe in windows "working properly" message, though in my BIOS menu there is no reference for USB or any other port I could switch on or off, and I do not have a manual neither...
Curiously, I can recharge batteries plugging in devices, hence it is present but not plug and play detecting, thus it doesn't allow to use devices (data transfer).
Thanks for your help anyway and let my know if any clue comes to you in order to solve this issue.

Andres, have you tried uninstalling the USB controllers in Device Manager, then rebooting allowing XP to re detect them?

    Regards - Charles

    Yeap

Yes I already uninstalled USB root service, though after reinstalling them ... the same result: no plug and play detection.
    Thanks for your advise anyways.

    what make/model machine?

xp pro sp2? if it's xp pre-sp, the usb drivers are NG on many systems. u have to get the sp or specific drivers from the maker

what devices are u plugging in?

i'd take another look at bios options. and i'd check the maker's site for firmware updates a la bios/chipset updates.

    Hey Skeet:
    Thanks for your answer.
This is the brief story....I used the recovery disks after having some issues with Norton antivirus and another software.
I reinstalled everything twice, since USB stop working from the beggining, thus I reinstalled Windows, then SP2 and all rhe updates from MS. Afetr that, all the applications and original software that came with this Sony Vaio VGN-T250P Windows Pro. USB refuse to work.
So far I check over the ports ( "working perfect" says Windows), and later I updated the driver from Sony, though it was using the last version.
Any device I plug in do not autoplay: I can charge the battery of my iPod, though do not transfers music (Windows do not see the device). I cannot use the printer, no external hard drive Iomega can be connected, neither a WinTV can be used, etc...
When I go to BIOS, there is no option for USB ports.
My conclusion is that the plug and play do not work, after checking up 'services' on Windows. I do not know how to start ar turn on that function
    Thanks for your help buddy
    I'll appreciate any further help
    Have a good one
