This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop, Model 6100. After installing SP2, my USB port devices(a Logitech cordless mouse, and a Kingston 128meg portable storage device) are now either unrecognized, or stopped working BUT ONLY after the laptop is either put into standby mode or goes into hibernation and then is awakened again.
If I reboot the laptop, they are both ok. Then, when I put it into standby(Fn+F3) and bring it back via the power button, I get a USB symbol on the taskbar with a ballon that tells me that a USB device is not recognized by Windows. Troubleshooting it just comes up with something that says get rid of it and buy a new one-or words to that effect.
I might mention that this laptop has two USB ports in the back, but under Device manager in the Systems icon, it shows 3 USB root hubs and 3 USB devices, each with its own device number.
I hope that someone out there can help.
    Thanks.

SP2 contains a huge number of USB fixes, specifically to address those kinds of problems. Its possible you need an update to your BIOS or system drivers from toshiba to fix a bug.

I would update as above, and if no joy, i would strongly recommend calling microsoft about it.

    USB Driver Display Problem
A display problem in SP2 incorrectly displays the previous version of USB drivers on the system, even though the drivers have been replaced with newer versions. To correct the display problem, run the Device Manager, select, in turn, each USB device that is reporting an old version of the driver, and click the Update Driver button. After you complete the update for each USB device, Device Manager should display the correct version for each driver.

USB ports problem after update to SP2

Thanks Joe and Maggie, for your kind interest. I searched around Toshiba's support site with no luck. I just now tried to update the drivers per your suggestion, Maggie. I have 3 Intel USB Host Controllers listed as: Intel 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller 2482 and 2484 and 2487.
Below that are 3 listings of USB ROOT HUB. I attempted to update each instance of the driver(6 total) using the hardware update wizard, both online and automatically, as well as manually from the specified location C:\Windows|system32. In each case the Wizard states that it cannot continue because it couldn't find a better match for the hardware than I am currently using.
I spoke with Toshiba tech support, last night, who said they'd walk me through a solution-for a fee. I declined, but, they did state, before we disconnected, that there is a feature, which I found, under USB ROOT HUB properties, under the Power Management tab, which states: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. I unchecked this feature, but, there was no change. After that is when I wrote to the BBS.
    Thanks.
    Vic

My trouble with USB was my 1.1 worked but my 2.0's did not. I went to device manager and removed all of the entries for Universal Serial Bus controllers. I refreshed the device manager and all was back and working properly.

skaler2k I have those(2842,2847) controllers on my Dell Laptop. the drivers are pointed to c:\windows\system32\drivers\ They both upgraded to SP2. Both hubs point there also. I don't have USB2 natively but do have a 4 port usb2 hub from Orange Micro and use those drivers.
Check your usb properties and see if they are 5.1.2600.2180

USB ports problem after update to SP2

Maggie, yes, those are the drivers I have. Under Driver Details, the complete file version is: 5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158).
Just prior to checking this, I received a posting from BMoore1129 who suggested that I delete and then refresh. I deleted the 3 Host controllers and the 3 Root Hubs(I'm still puzzled about why I have 3 of each when there are just 2 connection points on the back). I then turned the laptop off. When I turned it back on, Windows found everything(3controllers and 3 Hubs, as well as the logitech mouse). The mouse worked. I then put the laptop to standby, woke it up-the mouse is dead, and the balloon on the taskbar is the same as before-telling me to reconnect. If it doesn't fix it, buy a new one(replace). I'm guessing the 3rd USB port is internal and connects the CD drive? No matter. I do have another logitech USB receiver and mouse, and I'll see how they behave-though I have low expectations of success, as this mouse and receiver come back ok every time, except after return from stanby or hibernation.
The trackpoint works consistently. Should I
go into the BIOS and disable it?

    Hi Skaler,
I use the same laptop (Toshiba 6100) and have just put SP2 on. Had no problems with the USB ports (though mine only shows 2 as I thought it should) so I would suspect your plugins - mouse and removable drive. Had same sort of problem with my mouse and got the new driver which sorted that problem. For what its worth.
    Regards
    Rick

USB problem after XP SP2 install

Thanks to one and all for your kind attention and offers of help. Turns out JoeHobart's suggestion was on the money. I revisited Toshiba's site and found that my BIOS was out of date by two revisions. The very last revision addresses my exact problem. So, the USB ports are back in business. I'm puzzled why the problem never manifested itself until after the SP2 update. I now have caused a completely different problem. The Toshiba laptop has a built-in wireless receiver, and that is how we connected to bellsouth-via a Microsoft wireless router. The BIOS update made the connection between the router and the receiver disappear. Can anyone point me to the proper forum where I might get some help and reestablish the connection?
    Thanks again.
