I recently built a PC (specs below)

The USB ports in the front of the tower (both) fail to recognize "some" devices. The USB ports in the rear (all 4) always recognize any devices.

I noticed when I plugged my mass storage device into the front USB port, windows XP reported the device failed and was not recognized. I plugged it into the back USB port and it worked fine.

I thought the front USB ports were not working so I plugged another device into the fron USB port, an old gamepad, and it was recognized by the OS.

I re-checked the connection for the front USB ports and all looks fine.

Is this the fault of the storage device or the USB controller??

Probably neither - some USB devices will not work on the front ports. Difference is that the front ports are soft wired to the header, the rear ports are hardwired to the motherboard direct.

I don't have an explanation for this behaviour :(

You can always remove the USB controllers in Device Manager and reboot to let Windows install them again. This may solve the problem, but probably won't make any difference.

    Hi,

Seems strange to me as well. First-off, I would reseat the cable connections to the front USB.

When you go to Device Manager, check that the "Root Hubs" and Controllers are listed correctly. On mine there are 5 Root Hubs, 4 Host Controllers and 1 "Enhanced Controller ". The host controllers should be labeled with the chipset name (ie. Intel) and the chip number.

Check the driver updates at Asus relating to USB (they may be included as a package with updated chipset drivers).
Check the updates for your chipset at the Intel website, just in case Asus do not have a recent inclusion relating to USB.

Check the BIOS update version information for your motherboard at Asus. See if anything relates to USB and if it seems relevant.

    Matt

    thnx,

The device manager shows 5 Root Hubs, 4 Host Controllers and 1 "Enhanced Controller" labeled correctly Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658...

I rechecked the motherboard connection and updated 915P intel chipset drivers at intel website.

There were no USB or chipset driver updates at the Asus website.
    the BIOS is latest version.

    See here - specifically
Seems it may be a question of the power supply to the front ports.
