I have just upgraded my pc with an ASUS %5N-E SLI motherboard and an ASUS GT8600 graphics card. However my usb ports are not working. When i plugged in my usb devices the power comes on but windows xp does not detect them at all. I read somewhere that it could be the creative sound blaster audigy card that i have that could cause the conflict and i removed the sound card but it's still the same. I checked under device manager and the usb controllers are working properly. I tried reinstalling the usb drivers but it doesn't help. Also i have been getting "unknown hardware detected" everytime windows starts up. I have no idea what hardware it is refering to. I checked device manager and it is on PCI standard ISA bridge. The device status is "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) ". Anyone who knows please help. I have been spending the past 2 days trying to solve these 2 problems but nothing works.

My experience in replacing MOBO is zero.
My only suggestion is get the MOBO manual out and recheck and reconnect all of your USB connections.
Hopefully a forum member with more hardware experience will chime in.

the problem is that the usb ports are inbuilt on the motherboard and there is no connection i had to make except plugging in my usb devices into the port. Anyone could help? This is just so frustrating.

    Just a reach here.
Do you have an entry for USB 2.0 Enhanced USB Controller and/or USB 2.0 Root Hub in Device Manager? While you may have other Root Hubs there, these would need to be present in addition to them, perhaps this is it.
If the USB drivers are still on the hard drive in their installation folder, Install the driver using the Device Manager for this Unknown by browsing to the folder with the 'Setup Information' file, instead of running the Setup program.
You would choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" when doing this.

i only have Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, Standard OpenHCD USB Host COntroller and 2 USB Root Hub. So is it suppose to say USB 2.0 Enhanced USB Controller? Where is the usb driver installation folder located?

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller is probably correct for you, try PeteC's advice.

You may to need to install manually using this method. Get the CD that has your motherboard drivers on it. Check the folders for the USB drivers using Windows Explorer, canceling the setup that may occur as a result if inserting the CD. There may be a Readme file in each folder, when you find the correct folder, make sure there is a file identified as "Setup Information" in the File Type column in Windows Explorer (must be set to Details for this, instead of Icons or Thumbnails).
Go into Device Manager, go to the Unknown Device and choose Install Driver, say no to search the internet for a driver, then let it do it Automatically, your CD should be scanned and hopefully the driver will be found by Windows. If not, choose the option for a specific location.

If you do not find a Setup Information file. Then you may have them zipped into a file. USB may be part of the name of this file, or simply Device as part of the name, or the name of the folder may have USB in it somewhere.
Unzip this file onto your hard drive into a folder.
Use Device Manager as above, instead point it to the files copied onto the drive.

When you changed the motherboard, was the old one a different size. Is it possible that one of the mounting stand-offs is under the new motherboard in the wrong position?

Did the motherboard go squarely onto the mountings. If the motherboard is not centred on the mountings correctly, it can cause a short.

It mentions a resource conflict. Go into the BIOS settings at startup and disable at least the onboard audio, you can use your Audigy card. Look for any other devices that do not need to be enabled (I keep seeing an onboard modem enabled in many BIOSes, when the motherboard does not have a modem). Disable the onboard LAN if you would like to try that, if it is the cause, you can purchase a low priced PCI LAN adapter.

    Matt
