Can anyone tell me why this appears in the taskbar everytime I start up my cp? It's a usb symbol that refers to this notification "this device can perform faster ". What do I do to improve the speed? Thanks

It seems like your computer is only capable of USB 1.1. You can get a USB 2.0 add-on card and connect your device to that instead.

You can turn off this message so it does not bother you until you get a USB 2.0 add-on card as Christer has advised...

    1) Right-click on "My Computer" icon on your Desktop and select "Properties "
    2) Select the "Hardware" tab then click on the "Device Manager" button
    4) Click on the [+] plus sign in front of the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" icon to expand it
    5) Right-click on any "USB Universal Host Controller" and select "Properties "
    6) Select the "Advanced Tab "
    7) Select\check on the box near the bottom of the Properties window that says "Don't tell me about USB errors" then click "OK "

Remember to deselect this option if\when you install the new card.

Are you sure that all your USB ports are USB 2.0 - on older mobos there was often a mix.

Shut down. Remove all your external USB devices by unplugging - boot up - do you still receive the message? If not plug a known USB 2 device into each socket in turn and see on which socket(s) the message is generated - these will be USB 1.

If this is inconclusive go to Device Manager and uninstall/remove all USB controllers and root hubs and reboot to allow Windows to detect them again and load the drivers.

My cp is from 2002. It's not that old. I am planing on doing the re-installation when I get my e-mail cleaned out.

6 Years is a very long time in the electronics world. I agree with Pete, one of my systems has rear USB 1.1 and front USB 2.0. Trial and error will determine your setup.

What's your motherboard make/model, if you don't know can you provide the model number of the computer?

Also, if you open your device manager, do you see
    by expanding the heading:
    Universal Serial Bus Controllers:
any entries with text including: "USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller "

Look in Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Is there a controller with the description "Enhanced "?

Yes I do have an enhanced controller. I did a driver update on this and something installed. I rebooted and the usb notification did not come up. I also did a standby and again it did not come up. I think maybe that was the culprit. Thanks everyone.
