I have recently made the move from Win 98SE to Win 2000 Pro. The move has gone very well except that Windows does not seem to recognise any USB device, or at least it will not see any USB connected devices. I would really appreciate any advice or information about trouble-shooting this problem, since I’ve exhausted all my usual resources. I’m not very familiar with W2k native utilities, so maybe I’m missing a very obvious trick.

Prior to the move all USB devices (mouse, printer, scanner, 7 port hub, webcam etc.) all ran without problems. No hardware changes were made during the move. I did flash the BIOS (Award) to the latest version (v 4.51 PG) and rebooted to Win 98 to check the results before reformatting the drive and performing a clean install of Win 2000 Pro.

I ran the upgrade report from Windows before moving to W2k and it predicted a hardware problem with USB:
“Universal Serial Bus controllers "“ USB Mass Storage (not currently present).
That would seem to be my problem: if only I understood it! I have scoured the MS Windows support pages for help but haven’t found anything that doesn’t turn out to be a dead link.

I have one item listed in Device Manager under "˜Universal Serial Bus controllers’: "˜Unsupported VIA USB Universal Host Controller’.
Following the W2k install I updated the VIA drivers using the manufacturer’s 4-in-1 Hyperion utility (v 4.45). I don’t know whether the installed USB Host Controller is duff or just not formally recognised (signed) by Microsoft.

Only 2 items in CMOS refer to USB:
    1) OnChip USB enabled, in BIOS Features Setup
    2) Assign IRQ to USB enabled, in PNP/PCI config.

I have updated the drivers for the Sound Card and Video Card. Device Manager is currently not showing any conflicts (no yellow asterisks). I have noticed that my Soundcard, Video card and DAB radio card all share IRQ 11, but this is not reported as a problem or conflict.

I hope I’ve provided enough information for someone to help me. I’m new to this BB but I’ve browsed it long enough to be impressed with the expertise it attracts!

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried bringing up the properties for your "Unsupported VIA USB Universal Host Controller" in device manager and get it to list all drivers then choose "VIA USB Universal Host Controller" from the list?

Got it in one! As soon as I did that, w2k installed the USB root hub and everything was back in business.

Thanks, unixfan! This is definitely a good place!
