This problem isn't new or unique, I know - there are a zillion net moans about it.

I just wondered if anyone had seen any recent news on a fix for it?

My (current) problem is with a new Acer XPPro laptop running SP2 (as loaded out of the box) .

    Cheers :)

Sounds normal to me unless maybe you get the message every time you reboot. Might need more info from you;)

Steve, I don't think that it's normal for the Found New Hardware Wizard to popup when a modern (brand new, actually) laptop gets a USB mouse plugged in. An acknowledgment is maybe to be expected, like "Hey, I just found a new toy.....gimme a mo....there you go, it outta work now ".

There are many, many hits about this annoyance on the net - some folks have commented that it's maybe worse since Service Pack 2, but I haven't analyzed it that closely.

You you get the new hardware message when you plug the mouse in or do you get it everytime you reboot?

When you plug in a new usb device, i.e. a mouse, thumb drive, etc. into a usb port you will always get the New Hardware Found Notification...the very first time you plug it into a port.

If you later plug the same device into a different usb port you will get the notification again because the hardware address is different than the previously used usb port.

If you remove the device, and later plug it into a port that was used previously for the same device, you will not get the notification again because Windows has a record of the device having been plugged into that port previously.

If you get the notification every time the device is removed (or at reboot) or plugged into the same port, then that's a problem with the Windows installation specific to your computer or your hardware.

The same device, plugged into the same port, should not provoke the notification of New Hardware Found.
