    Hello

I am having an issue with my XP Pro machine not recognizing external USB hard drives. I looked around the MS KB and found some articles around but not exactly on that issue. Anyone knows how to resolve that? Is it a matter of installing a new SP?

    Thanks
    Khaled

My first thought would be to go into Device Manager and remove all the USB hubs and controllers ( Right Click on item > Properties > Remove), reboot and let Windows find them again. Then hitch up the USB drive and see if it is recognised.

Have you tries Add New Hardware via control panel? This method will result in windows telling you that the device is detected, installed drivers & ready to go, OR it will let you know that it needs drivers for it.

A possible cause of this issue is using a usb 2.0 device in a usb 1.1 port. make sure you have usb 2.0 ports on the computer. If not, go out and get a usb 2.0 PCI card for about 15 bucks, usually comes w/ 2-4 ports.
