    i'm using a HP laptop dv2700

anyways, my problem is sometimes USB connected devices keep getting this message that USB malfunction blah blah

my external hard drive used to work and now it doesn't.
also my iphone used to connect with no problems but now every now and then it says malfunction.

only my flash drive/mouse has never had this message come up.

    any suggestions?

I expect the external drive is powered through the USB system. My thoughts would be that the USB system is getting overloaded. I recommend that you get a self-powered hub to run any of the "larger" equipment.
