I have an adapter for USB to IDE/SATA so that I could read some old internal disk drives. The computer will see the drive and load the drivers when plugged into the USB drive but I cannot access them. They are not visible under My Computer. I go to Device Manager and they are visible. I go to Computer Management and attempt to initialize the drive and it tells me that the "Device is not ready ". I have the drive set as master and plugged in properly. What am I doing wrong?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

It may be the way the partition was made. You may have a struggle on your hands trying to access the data on the drive. If you don't need the data, remove the partition/s on the drive and make a new one (in Disk Management, right-click on the partition and select Delete Volume). If you then format the drive as FAT32 it will be easier to work on than if you format as NTFS, but cannot handle files larger than 4GB.

    Matt,
Thanks I thought of that so I also tried a brand new, fresh out of the box non-partitioned drive with the same results. I switched to a drive with data thinking that I was having trouble due to the fact that the new drive may not have been partitioned or formatted. I am really stumped.

There may be a problem allocating a drive letter to it. Try changing the drive letter of CD/DVD drives to an end letter, like X: or Y:. Same with say, card reader drives or just disconnect them if you can.
