Have a USB 80 GB hard drive shared on one WinXP PC. Cannot see it from other WinXP PC on LAN. Why? or how?

Try unsharing an then share again. Rename it. If it has a $ in the share name only other admins can get to it by using the address bar. I've had the "C" drive do that and played around and got it shared by all. You can't mess with the permissions if it has that $ on there. My laptop did it to me after I put Pro on there. Now the "C" drive is called laptopC but it shows up on the other computers. I'm the only user so it was a Pita not being able to get there from the other computer.

    Maggie,

You were right. It had to do with the share name for the drive... no $, but a blank. Can now *see* the external usb drive from the other PC, but can't access it. Get an error message saying the drive is not accessible. Also "Not enough server storage is available to process this command." But the latter appears everytime there is any sort of problem reading a drive. Can read all other drives on that PC, however.

    Any other suggestions?

    Chuck

    Maggie,

Was just able to implement the recommendation re. the registry entry in http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/...orum/85930.html.
It works! Doesn't seem logical since all the other drives were available on that PC, just not the external.

Your modest comment, "As you can see I don't know the answer." reminded me of one of my favorite anecdotes:
Just before Socrates took the hemlock, one of his students addressed him and said: "Socrates, oh Socrates, how did you become so wise? "

To which Socrates replied: "Men think me wise because I know what I don't know. "

    Cheers and thanks,
    Chuck

I had done so many things getting my "C" drive to show up I even added the group "everyone" into gepedit.msc. Changed the permissions also. One of those things worked!! It is just not something you want to admit. I'll probably do it again . Thanks for getting back with your answer.
