Well, I have searched for an hour and don't see anything about my question. I hope I'm posting on the right board section (since I'm a devout W98SE fan, and this might be 98SE specific)...

I've had this happen twice (second time was yesterday).

I think I have USB device driver conflicts! I have had a USB printer for some time, and it seems that when I load other USB device drivers, my system just hates it.

Yesterday's details (short list): USB all in one printer/fax/copier/etc (Lexmark X6170). I loaded the driver/program for an old Logitech USB quick cam (new, from their site). Then this system went haywire!

I ended up uninstalling the all in one software, the camera software, and starting pretty much all over with my WISP settings, uninstalling and reinstalling Mozilla, and a host of other things to get back to "normal ".

The last time this happened, I had a 32K USB pen drive (unknown manufacturer, as usual) with it's software on the system. I bought a newer 256K USB solid state drive, followed the instructions to install, and ended up having to format the C: drive to start all over. It was that bad... That was about a year ago.

Since then, I have done without USB solid state drives alltogether.

Meanwhile, I think I see a pattern here. Am I the only one having this headache?

Thanks for reading all this mess, I hope someone here has an idea or two for me...

A Couple of things, USB cams and Printers don't like working in harmony very much. I know this is a problem on some XP installs and believe it's also similar with 98. (I may stand corrected here?)

Not having recent 98 experience I am suggesting an XP fix here (sorry!) Try reversing the order of installing the printer/scanner and cam (after uninstalling both fully), also there may be a combination of physically connecting one of the devices after installing the other. Once again sorry, it's going to be a process of elimination.

Also make sure you have latest windows USB drivers installed, and may be worth ininstalling the windows USB drivers and reinstalling them.

    Thanks for the reply Paul,

I'll try the USB driver update first and let you know what happens next...

Oops, that will be second, I'll have to ghost my hard drive before doing anything else... ;)

Couple of issues here - you may already be aware of these.

First, some USB devices require that you install software and drivers before hooking them up. Did you check first? Second, yes - there were a couple of 98se USB patches issued and depending upon your MoBo chipset, you may need a USB filter driver too. Lastly, if you are going to uninstall and re-install, I'd suggest you use some thing like RegCleaner to make sure you get all vestiges of old software & registry enries off your machine before trying to re-install.

Advise re: progress and I'll try to be more specific if necessary.

    ;)

Sorry guys, I've been offline for a coupla days (consarn pc)....

Paul, I still would like to try USB driver updates and will try to figure out where to get them (I'll Google "M$ USB" first)...

Rockstar, I'm pretty sure I followed the mfr's directions on this, usually drivers first, but I'll try your suggestions after I do the Ghost thing....

mattman, thanks for your reply, but the link is dead...

Everyone responding, Thanks again, I'll let you know what happens as this unfolds....
