When I plug something into the USB port on the front of the computer it works just fine. The problem comes in when I try to remove the device. When I go to the remove hardware safely button it will not let me stop the device. It keeps telling me that a program is still using the device. I have waited for like 30 minuets and still it is in use. The same problem came in when I tried to disconnect my digital camera. I uninstalled the drivers and restarted and it did not help. Please help.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

    Just unplug it.
For USB 2.0 devices they are required to be "hot swappable."

Whether the driver for the device is able to successfully communicate with the XP device manager is a different story. This should not cause you undo concern. The lock on the device could come from anywhere -- your Antivirus software, some caching software, even System Restore settings. Or a poorly written device driver.

If you are sure your files are saved, remove the device.
