I guess the question is...Do devices connected to the computer to the USB plugs work before windows boots? I have in mind a USB hard drive to use as a recovery device when the computer does not boot to windows.

While I "m at it, how about the cordless KB and Mice? Will they work in DOS?

In order for a USB device such as a keyboard to work before the computer boots into an OS - Windows or otherwise, it must be supported in the BIOS.

I've seen it labelled as "USB in DOS ". and a couple of other ways that I can't recall at the moment.

I don't know if other USB devices will work outside Windows - perhaps someone else can provide that info.

I do know, however, that if your USB keyboard isn't supported in the BIOS, there's no way to get to the BIOS with that keyboard if you need to make changes. I had an old socket 7 board that didn't support a USB keyboard at boot. Consequently, I had to keep a ps2 keyboard handy and plug it in if I ever had to hit 'Del' to enter my BIOS setup.

    Thanks for the reply iceolated.

My BIOS has a selection for "Legacy USB" and I can select KB and/or mouse. It says nothing about other USB devices.

You know I've always wondered why anyone would want a cordless KB or mouse. If I'm on the other side of the room, I can't see the screen to do anything anyway. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Anyone know whether USB hard drives work before windows boots?

I like my wireless keyboard and mouse cause there's 2 less wires to get in my way on my desktop. Plus it makes the mouse more maneuverable.
