    Part 1

I purchased a Sandisk Cruzer 2.0 flash drive and used it for a while. I didn't use it for several months and decided to plug it in once again. All of a sudden Windows doesn't detect it correctly. Windows realizes it's a USB device but won't run the drivers. I tried unplugging and replugging and rebooting before giving up. Who cares? I could get a new one for $15 and all the data on it was on my harddrives.

    Part 2

After this episode my USB controllers are going crazy filling themselves up with root hubs, family USB universal host controllers and USB composite devices. In addition my computer randomly alerts me with those two successive beeps as if I was plugging in and taking out a usb flash drive over and over. It's scary. My computer won't boot half the time because of this. One time the bios said I had 6 usb devices besides my keyboard and mouse.

Any ideas how to resolve this issue?

I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all updates.

Hi Howitzer27. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :) It looks like your USB controllers might have become corrupted. Click Start< Right Click on My Computer and click properties. Click the hardware tab and then click device manager. Look for the category that says Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Expand that category by clicking the plus sign next to the USB controllers. Right click every device under the USB category and click uninstall. After that reboot the computer to allow windows to reinstall the USB drivers. See if you can then plug in a flash drive into your computer and hopefully it will work.
