    Hello All:

My current computer has USB 1.1. If I purchased a USB external HDD which today would be USB 2.0, I'm sure, would the USB 2.0 HDD be compatible/work with the USB 1.1 on my computer?

    Thanks in advance

USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.1 so you shouldn't have any trouble. If however, you would like the extra speed 2.0 offers, and you have an extra PCI slot available, you can by an add-on card for 15-20 dollars. The speed difference is significant.

Zander's Post is on the money! I bought an external USB 2.0 hard drive to use on a 1.1 and the results were like boiling eggs in the sunshine.

I visited my PC store and read on the box that, "USB 2.0 is 40 times Faster than 1.1" and I believe that after I bought the USB 2.0 card. His price estimate is very close also. You will be happy with a faster USB, giving you extra slots for future 2.0 accessories

Thanks for all the info...really appreciate it,
If I get a USB2 card and install it, what happens to the old USB 1.1 that is already installed? I have my printer connected to the USB 1.1, will it still work?

    Thanks

Your old USB 1 ports will still work at USB 1 speed like they do now and the USB 2 ports you added will work at USB 2 speed.
