Not long ago my USB 3 adapter stopped recognizing high speed devices when plugged in. I get something on the order of "This USB mass storage device can transfer data faster if connected to a Super Speed USB 3.0 port." I'm hoping it is a software problem so I don't have to purchase another adapter, but I don't know how to check it. I'm using W10 and a homemade 3 year old desktop computer.

It's possible the USB 3.0 drivers are corrupted, even if Windows says it's working properly. Go to Device manager and uninstall the USB 3.0 adapter. Reboot and Windows should reinstall it automatically, loading fresh copies of the driver. If no joy, install the driver that came with the adapter or from the adapter manufacturer's Website.

In addition to Tony's suggestions, make sure this device is plugged into a USB 3.0 port on your computer. Most computers have both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0.

Sadly, the USB specification only "requires" specific color coding for the wiring connected to USB ports, not the actual connector. It is only "recommended" that USB 3.0 ports be blue and not all manufacturers comply with that recommendation. Still, many do so either make sure this device is plugged into a blue USB port, or check your user guide to make sure the port you are using is USB 3.0.

Bill, I get the idea that his USB 3.0 is an add-on card, not motherboard integrated because he said, "...so I don't have to purchase another adapter."

Has W10 turned the USB ports off?

OK... I finally got to try this and it seems to have worked. I don't get the message about the device working faster if connected to a USB 3.0 port. Does anyone know of a way to verify that my 3.0 ports are actually working at 3.0 level other than moving a large file around and comparing times?

Because it's backward compatible, putting a USB 2.0 thumb drive into the USB 3.0 port and sending a set piece of data will show a time to download. Swap to a USB 3.0 drive and repeat should show a quicker time. Just my easy Kiwi thoughts.
One assumes that any cables/leads you use are USB 3.0 BLUE? Your USB 3.0 devices are named brands and not of Oriental flavour? Thumb drives have been found to give misleading capacities. ie. show 16GB and are in fact only 4GB!!!
