    hi
My dad's computer has a micro star k3 Ultra 2 series motherboard. The normal usb is 1.1. However there is a usb 2 connector on the board and i have connected the front usb on the case to it and ensured the pins are correctly connected. WIndows xp wont recognise it as usb 2, despite having installed sp1. Anyone have any ideas as it should just update the driver to usb2? There is a usb2 install program on the motherboard software disc but that doesnt make any difference either. My next step will be to buy a usb2 pci card.
    thanks
    steve

You may find some help here . I had an Asus board which supposedly was USB 2 on a couple of ports, but could never get that to work :(

Suggest you try a PCI card.

    agree with pci solution

I just want to second Pete's pci suggestion and add: you can get a card with both usb2 and firewire. Your question is one of the commonest I've heard from the group I teach, and they've tried it all, and the pci card is the only solution.

    :)

    hi,
sparrow, I am dual booting 98SE with XP pro and I installed a USB2 PCI card into my PC as I was hoping that I would be able to use my scanner on USB 2.0.
Unfortunately Canon has problems with drivers and chip sets so I continued to scan at USB 1.1 XP is happy with the card but 98 SE is not.
Every time I boot into 98 I get the new Hardware dedected and I have to cancel it out I have tried more than once reinstalling the drivers for the card but no go.
It all works ok it is just the boot.

    hawk22,
You don't mention the specs or details of your card, but generally the cards come with drivers for the 98 editions. XP doesn't need the drivers, but 98 does.

Best check with the dealer for newer or different drivers if your's don't work, or trade the card for one from another manufacturer.

I agree with Pete and Sparrow. Buy a USB 2.0 card...they are quite cheap. I added a 5 (4 external and 1 Internal) connector PCI USB 2.0 card and as they say "Bob's your Uncle ". Between the card and my USB 2.0 hub I'm swimming in USB. :)

I bought an Orange Micro 4 port USB2 Controller for my laptop and Windows saw it as a Nec I had to unpack the driver, reboot, add the card then go into Device Manager ,upgrade Nec, then point it to the Orange Micro driver.
It blue screened any other way.

    Hi
Followed the advice and I bought a pci card, which was instantly recognised as usb2. Previously the wireless network adaptor I had installed in the supposed usb2 adaptors left me with a message that I had installed a high speed usb device in low speed hub (or something similar). Im not getting that message any more cos its now working as usb2. However I am still getting an icon in my taskbar for safely removing a device. This is still referring to the network adaptor. How do I get rid of this icon from my taskbar? Right clicking does not give an exit option.
    thanks
    Steve

I doubt you will unless you unplug your USB wireless network adaptor. Since going onto Broadband recently with a USB ASDL modem that icon resides permanently in the Notification Area on my computer.

Interestingly some USB devices will not work properly when plugged into the front ports - a USB file transfer cable is a good example. I have no real idea why.
