I've searched previous posts and it appears none answer the following question(s).

I have an internal front panel usb port. (NOT A HUB...just an extension from motherboard headers to the front of the case)
Is the pinout for usb 2.0 the same as 1.0?
I ask because the usb header on the motherboard is the same as the older internal front panel.
I guess my concern is: Is there a differene in usb 2.0 ports vs. 1.0 ports? Will this front panel usb port carry a 2.0 device (remember I stated the motherboad supports 2.0)
Is there a physical difference in wiring etc?

    Joe,

The USB 1 and 2 ports are physically the same, but as to the wiring I have a feeling that there may be differences, although USB 2 is backwardsly compatible with USB 1 using the same USB cable. The differences are most likely to be at the mobo end.

The best way of answering this is to refer to the mobo manual - if you don't have one download a copy from the manufacturer's site.

In the manual you should see the pin assignments - on my Asus board the pins are named differently and there is an inference that the voltage may be different - 5v for USB 2, no value given for USB 1, just Power.

'fraid I can't help further - sure to be many hits on Google re USB 1/2 differences.

I guess this answers my question...found at everythingusb.com

Do USB 1.1 cables work with USB 2.0 devices?
Ideally, yes. USB 2.0 architecture uses the same cables and connectors as USB 1.1 compliant products. Unforunately, only 3 out of 11 cables on the market are certified as USB 1.1 compliant. You may run into the cables that cause problems connecting high-speed peripherals. To avoid negative user experience, most vendors include USB 2.0 compliant cables with their USB 2 PCI cards and peripherals.

After I build the system and 'try' it, I'll report back with my findings!
