I have just installed a USB 2.0 internal PCI card into my (now elderly) Fujitsu Siemens T-Bird (Celeron 766MHz I think, 512MB RAM), but its entry in the Device Manager, "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller ", shows that "This device cannot start. (Code 10). " I have searched for drivers and tried to install one deemed to be compatible, AliEhci.sys, but on apparent completion ungracefully restarts the PC and the card remains unstarted. Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

What operating system? If XP, be sure to have Service Pack 2. What brand-make-model # pci card?

That driver file is for an ALI chipset.

The T-bird information I found (500Mhz) says it has a VIA chipset:
    http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/consumer/13046/Art13046.html

If it has a VIA chipset (if you are still not certain, look at the main chips on the motherboard or Everest in my signature could help if you have the right basic drivers installed), get the VIA 4 in 1 drivers. The drivers link for that system says that motherboard has a "VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universial Host Controller ".

Via also required a driver filter for USB on their earlier configurations. I have not run into this for a few years but it was quite prevalent (and required) in most Win98 era systems.

Tony T sees it better than I do. I thought it was the onboard USB controller that Windows could not install, but there is the word "enhanced" in the heading, so it will be the drivers for the USB 2.0 card.

As Tony asked, can you identify the card? If there is no make or model on the card, take the make and number from the main chip on the card and do a Google search with it.

You found the aliEhci.sys file, go to Device Manager and uninstall the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" under the heading Universal Serial Bus Controllers. When you restart the computer and the New Hardware wizard asks for where to find the drivers, direct it to this file (although Windows normally needs an .inf file to tell it how to install the drivers). If you still get stuck, uninstall all the USB controllers listed in Device Manager (you may need to reset/reinstall the drivers for all the controllers).

If you are confident that that is the correct driver file, see if you can find a matching .inf file or the rest of the driver files. If you find the .inf file (unzip/decompress it if it is zipped), right click on it and select Install, that will add it's details to Window's driver information (the "list" in the New Hardware wizard).

PS Just for your info, here is the T-bird webpage:

Sorry it's taken me a while to get back! Thanks for all the responses so far...
The USB card is not branded but it has an ALI M5273 chip.
I subscribe to driveragent.com and it pointed me to the AliEhci.sys driver file I mentioned earlier. It is when I try to install this file that the PC crashes and restarts.
For information, my T-Bird appears to be a C76-type model.

I see a 3mb download for it at Driverguide, which probably includes the full set of driver files and installer, although there seems to be a problem with the server. Registration is free at Driverguide.

They say ULi, but try these:
    http://www.nvidia.com/page/uli_drivers.html
If they unzip you should be able to direct the hardware wizard to them.

Supposed to be free drivers here, be careful though:
    http://mainboard-drivers-and-utilit...USB-Driver-2.1.9-Windows-98SE-ME-2000-XP.html

    IRQ problem here:
    http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic21777.html
Try different PCI slots. You can move other cards around as well. The drivers should be automatically reinstalled for those.

I can't find any drivers at ALi's Taiwanese website and they supposed to have an ftp server at aliusa.com, but that doesn't seem to exist.

Email them and ask for them to send you the drivers:
    http://www.ali.com.tw/eng/products/inquiry.htm

Did you try uninstalling everything listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager?

    Matt
Can't see C76 in that T-bird link (Celeron 766?). If it has an Intel chipset, get the chipset driver update (utility) from the Intel website.
