I just bought a multi card reader which support USB 2.0 I using Windows XP. I did search for info before post this question. Heard that XP dont support USB 2.0

Question 1 : If XP support USB 2.0, how to check is my motherboard USB is 1.1 or 2.0

Question 2: if XP dont support USB 2.0, so which O/S support USB 2.0 and why the card reader give support upto 2.0 ( for next OS XP2 or ????)

Because i pay extra $$ to my card reader 2.0 cost US$35 and if i know XP only support upto 1.1, then the card reader cost only US$12

Hope i heard that my PC is 2.0

    XP + SP1 supports USB 2.

You can check if your mobo supports USB 2 by looking in the mobo manual if you have one.

If you do not have a manual download and run Aida32 - click on motherboard in the left hand pane, then on the motherboard icon in the right hand pane. Log onto the manufacturers website and look at the specs for your board.

If a mainboard doesn't support 2.0 (which I'm sure mine doesn't since it's 2 years old), does that mean you're SOL if you want to use it? Can't Windows just kinda use it anyway, even if the board doesn't like it?

Sorry, Shadow, but USB 2 is a hardware standard; if the mobo doesn't support it, Windoze can't "just kinda" use it. As Pete suggested, though, you can add USB 2 with a PCI card ... four-port cards are available online for less than $15.

Yes a PCI card. That's what I mean. Does the BIOS have to support USB 2.0 if I were to put a PCI card in?

Good question ... check the home page for your board, and see if the latest BIOS versions support it.

I have the board's latest BIOS, but it's over 2 years old. Was USB 2.0 out yet then?

I got my Gigabyte GA-7DXR+ board in March 2002, and it has onboard support for USB 2.0. I don't know how long the board had been available before I got mine.

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to believe that you'd need BIOS support only if you wanted to boot from a USB device. Mouse and keyboard should be supported, anyway, as USB 1 has been around since at least 1997, and USB 2 is backwards compatible.

AFAIK USB support in BIOS is just that - no mention of 1 or 2 in my BIOS, just 'Enable USB'. My board supports USB 2 and I think it is a mobo function as opposed to BIOS.
