my current ups is not enough for what i want attached to it. have brought an apc bx1000 and after bringing it home realized it doesnt have ethernet connections for my dsl but if i plug the rj11 into the ups will that be enough for protection ???

is the ethernet that important as long as the computer itself and the phone line are going through the ups ???

I am somewhat confused by your usage of the term UPS and then apparently asking about surge protection for input service lines other than power.

Anyway, I think the answer you seeks would be - Yes, surge protection of the incoming phone line will be ample for protecting the downstream ethernet circuitry. That assumes you have a surge protectector that is sufficient for the purpose.

The Uninteruptible Power Supply itself will inherently protect the computer power input from all but the most powerful surges. If it has peripheral surges protection for the phone line, such as yours seems to, that should be all you need.

I agree with the rest of your post, but I have had my telephone equipment (before I had a PC) fried by a surge in the telephone line's usually minimal power. Maybe the confusion is that most UPS units incorporate surge protection devices as well, and gghartman used the term UPS when surge protection was the issue.

sorry about my term confusion. the device i just brought is a apc bx1000 UPS device which has the surge protection built into it. you answered my question though and it is appreciated. got this UPS for only 129.00 which aint that bad considering what the prices were when I searched the web.

i sorta thought that as long as everything is going through the ups device which basically is the phone line for dsl and the computer itself that the ethernet would also be auto. protected.

again thanks guess i will keep this one.

I too, as probably many others, have seen some nice scorched hardware due to lightning coming in through a modem. However, having said that - be careful re: running your DSL line into the surge protection circuitry afforded by your new UPS. My understanding is that you may encounter quite a speed loss coupled with potential connectivity issues. Call me dumb, but I'm running 1100VA APC UPS's but my 3MB DSL line is wired as a "home run" direct into the modem with no protection as per line technician recommendation. I had the "home run" wired from the outside phone box - nothing in between - only 4-5 feet of wire right into the modem and if you want to see some thunderstorms and lightning - come on down.

Lost 3 trees to lightening in the last 3 years and my dog's Invisible Fence control panel has been fried 5X in last 7 years but no problems with computer equipment including DSL modem.

    ;)

thanks for the info. actually right now i have my dsl phone plugged into a separate surge protector cuz the current ups does not have phone protection. maybe will just keep it protected the way it is through the surge and not worry about the ups side of it.

only reason going to a larger ups vs the apc es350 i am now using is because i switched to a 19" flat panel and ever since my 19 inch seems to go into power saving mode for no reason. which means i cant get at the desktop. as soon as i power system up on another connection with a normal display it comes up immediately. only thing i can think of causing the problem is the 350 ups with other things going through it not enough with the added 19 inch. and i keep getting a ups message telling me not enough backup power and needs to recharge. system i have is a p4 3.2ghz, 200g h.d., 8x dvd burner, router, and the 19 ".

did the specs for a ups on apc's web site and it suggests for what i have connected at least an 850va so i got the 1000va cuz the price was right.

thought about doing a direct run myself but the line i am using is direct just a little further than what you have. its not piggy backed on any of my other phone lines.

    thanks again.
