I currently run Vista Ultimate but want to changeover to Windows 7. However I do not want to run the top level of Windows 7, the Home version will do. Am I right in assuming that I cannot upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home? If this is correct and I think it will be better to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home after reformatting my hard drive. I have a backup on an external drive. Am I right in thinking that there are different versions of the Windows 7 disk, one for an Upgrade and another for a clean install? I am also fuzzy on the exact steps to take when reformatting then installing a new OS (I haven't done it in years!) Are you able to help or point me to where I can get this information. Thanks very much.

You shoule be able to do an upgrade, though a clean install is always best.
During the install you'll be prompted to delete the current partition and create a new one for the clean install. Backup all your data first. And wise to download any drivers you will need in advance and put them onto separate media.

Windows 7 upgrade is only supported from Windows Vista to the same edition of Windows 7. You could use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate Files and Settings if you wish.

    See: Windows 7 Upgrade Paths

No, All versions are on the same DVD. What you'll get just depends on the product key you'll purchase/enter.

One other important thing to remember is that if you have an upgrade version of Windows 7, you need to have an installation of Windows that is eligible for the upgrade installed (and activated) in order to perform the upgrade installation.

You can launch the installation of Windows 7 from within the previous installation of Windows, or you can boot from the DVD and let setup check for the previous installation. You can't install on an empty formatted drive, you will have to install the previous version of Windows and then perform the upgrade to Windows 7.
