OK, so I thought... well 5744 is also been called RC2, so lets have a go at my production machine

1st, since I have my data drive as a RAID5, I had to make a backup & 'undo' the RAID (no Silicon Image RAID driver for Vista available).

After that, & restoring my data to a 'normal' drive, started the upgrade...

Had to uninstall MS Fingerprint reader software & Nero. Did that.

Upgrade got underway... when it was finally time to boot into Vista, was greeted by a lovely BSOD:

    BugCheck A, {0, 1b, 1, 8182001c}

    Nice :(

No way around it, so reverted back to XP SP2 (at least they got that part working well).

There's more reports about update failures in the beta newsgroups...

OK.. found out from another beta tester that disabling on-board AC97 Audio allowed upgrade to be successful.

    Yes, it worked.

After upgrading you can go back & enable onboard sound again & it works (how's that for upgrade experience?)

But that's not where this story ends (oh NO!)

I only got a 1/2 working system (well, maybe more then 1/2, but not usable).

I got only about 25% of Control Panel items

No access to "System Properties" (and no, non of the other ways to 'get there' worked either). No access to Display properties. No access to 'Add/Remove Programs' (now called simply 'Programs'). & loads more

So for the 3rd time I just re-loaded a drive image backup of XP SP2 (tried once before B2, tried B2 & now RC2) and swore this was the last time I tried upgrading my fully loaded XP SP2.

I can't wait till January when people start trying to upgrade their XP SP2 machines.... Remember, this is suppose to be RC2, it should be working by now!

My advise? ONLY try to upgrade if you have a current drive image so you can get back to a working system if need be.

If you have the time: clean install!

So far ALL reports I have seen about people with upgrade problems they report NO problems at all when doing a clean install.

I will do that one day myself with the RTM, but I know I need around a full day / day + 1/2 to get a clean install back with all my software & the way I want it....

Anyway... remember YMMV, but don't say I didn't warn you!

I'm installing RC2 as I type. (clean install) It said upgrade was disabled???

This is a new build machine but am only using the onboard video. Hope it doesn't choke.

It's ALIVE...Was concerned about the onboard video that looked horrible during the install. Once up and running I was able to change the display settings and all is pretty and crisp..

Yes, you probably booted from the DVD. Upgrade only from within existing Windows install.

These Vista installs are an absolute nightmare

Just managed to install RC2 as an upgrade to RC1 on my dual boot system - at the 4th attempt.

Each time the computer rebooted for the first time (at Expanding Files 21%) it would start the upgrade again. I eventually realised that Vista does not have the intelligence of XP to bypass the boot from CD/DVD as first option in the boot sequence when restarting during the installation process.

After a few fruitless attempts to continue the process by removing the DVD as the system rebooted I set the boot order temporarily to HD as the first option and the install succeeded.

Yea, got that too... it raised a red flag when I had to type in the product key again, so I rebooted & removed the DVD...

And MS think it's close to being ready for release - not - that is so basic :D

Just upgraded from 5600 to 5744, as an 'Upgrade' on the Vista box. Took 1 1/2 hours, but had no probs whatsoever (that I can see).

Been doing the Beta thing since March or so. 5600 ran OK, tried 3 or 4 times to load the last upgrade 57 something or other, could not get a checksum to match. Tired of wasting DVD's on Microsoft.

5744 SEEMS to be OK. Time will tell.

    Oh - the test box

    Shuttle AN35N Ultra
    AMD MP 2000+ (left over from a failed duallie install) (13.5 X 133 = 1995+)
    1Gig PC2700

Been using this box since the first install of 5112

Also running Office 2K7 Beta - don't know if I like it or not.

I WILL pay for Vista Ultimate - Probably 250 - 300 USD. But I flat refuse to pay 600 - 650 USD for Office..... 2K3 works just fine....

Am still trying to get Nero to work, amongst many others....

Well, I've been asked to try the upgrade again, so wish me luck!

I'll be imaging my drives, and then have quite a bit of 'recording' to do of Cal's & some other reports.

If it'll fail again I still have to run more diagnostics & MS Beta Team will RD into the system to check around too.

They are having some 'suspects' as to why this is happeing...

CNET review gave it a painful poor review as for the upgrade. If I remember every upgraded windows product had problems that I tried. A clean install would be more ideal imo. Time will only tell. :D

I would never install a beta operating system over a smoothly running XP SP2. In fact, I actually created a separate partition for it, so that it is completely by itself. So far so good. RC2 "feels" more stable than RC1 as well. Anybody else have the same experience?
