I just purchased a windows 7 professional upgrade, (per windows 7 advisor)
I've already backed up everything and I will be upgrading this weekend.
    My question is:
Should I partition my harddrive so that the operating system is on one partition and my programs and files on another partition?

Any comments or suggestions either way would be appreciated.

There is no reason to do it...Regardless of where the OS is installed - if you ever redo it - you have to reinstall all the other apps anyway.

Thats an individual preference. I used to partition until I installed a second HDD(all important stuff goes on second drive.) OS on first HDD.

I would have two partitions, one (C:\) for the OS and programs and the other (D:\) for Data. Using backup you can make an image of the C:\ drive and if anything goes wrong you can replace it without worrying about your data being lost. Saying that I would also backup your data.

Then when the HD fails, you are still no where. Second HD is the only way to go.
