I have a few questions since SP2 support ends on Oct. 10 - and I may have more questions later.
    1. Do I do all the MS critical updates for SP1 before I install SP2?
    2. Where are all the updates stored when they are downloaded to my computer?
    3. When I do the SP2 update do I disable my internet connection which is through a wireless network in my house? I have a CD to do the upgrade or I could download it. Which is preferable? Have they updated SP2 since the CD was issued?
    4. Do I disable NAV when doing all these upgrades?
    5. After the upgrade, will my wireless network work? or will just the upgraded laptop be disabled? Do I enable it again by turning off the firewall in the control panel?
    6. Do all of my desktops and laptops have to be upgraded if I upgrade just one laptop?
    7. Should I disable the wireless card during the upgrade?
Sorry about all the questions but I am really anxious about doing this upgrade since everything works great and I am worried about destroying what I have.
BTW, the laptop I am going to upgrade has XP Pro

First a typo - it is support for SP 1 which ends in October.

    1. Install SP 2 which is cumulative and includes all the SP 1 updates - then go to Microsoft/Windows Update to patch beyond the initial release of SP 2 to the present day.

    2. Updates downloaded via updates are installed, but not stored. Uninstall, if available is through Add/Remove Programs. If you wish to save the updates to disk you should select Adminstrative Options from the left hand pane of Windows Updates and search for and select those updates that you want and 'Add to Download Basket'.

    3. As you have the CD use that - there will be no difference. I don't think if you update via the internet that you will receive any further updates until SP 2 is installed. Then, in either case, you will need to update to date. I would disconnect from the internet and disable your wireless connection while installing SP 2.

    4. Yes - it would be best to disable NAV

    5. I cannot say not using wireless connections. Note that the firewall in SP 2 is turned ON by default - in SP 1 it was turned OFF by default.

    6. Not essential. but highly desireable.

    7. see 3.

    FWIW I upgraded a friend's 98 box to SP 2 this week without a hitch :)

Footnote: SP 2 is far more than just a Service Pack - it is virtually a new OS.

SP 3 is expected once Vista is released.

Pete C - Thanks for the answers
ackerberg - Thanks for the questions

I was about to ask very similar questions regarding some friends who have SP1 computers. I think I have a good handle on how to proceed. I too have the SP2 CD and will proceed in line with PeteC's response.

I seem to be getting conflicting information about whether to do the critical updates for SP1 before updating to SP2 or the reverse. The website for my Presario laptop recommends doing the critical updates first. I finally called MS and got someone on the phone who kept vacillating about what I should do - so I have sort of discounted their advice. If I did the SP2 upgrade first, I suppose that some of the critical updates for SP1 might not be necessary, right?
I am still aphrehensive about this update. I have a wireless system in my house with 2 network printers and I am concerned about dealing with the firewall and getting everything to work. If I disabled the firewall in the SP2 updated computer, would I just have what I started with before the upgrade?

SP 2 is cumulative - it contains all the critical updates issued since XP was released. There is no need to update SP 1 before you install SP 2, but I cannot see what harm it would do if that is the route you prefer.

If you update SP 1 before installing SP 2 those critical updates for SP 1 will not be installed again by SP 2. They may well be removed and replaced by revised files which no longer require patching - as I posted previously SP 2 is virtually a new OS - far more than a collection of patches.

During install the Security Centre - new in SP 2, should recognise that a firewall is already installed and not enable the SP 2 firewall, which BTW is much improved over that in SP 1. It is simple enough to turn off - in fact, if memory serves, when the computer boots for the first time when the SP 2 installation is complete you will see a series of screens akin to those you would see when booting XP for the first time - one of those deals with the firewall.
