Upgrading to Mozilla 1.75 and plugins

I may have asked this before but am now considering the upgrade to 1.75 from 1.6. My Mozilla plugin file has only these items:
1. npul32.dll a default plugin
2. npswf32.dll Shockwave Flash 7.0 v19

I installed 1.6 using zip file so I plan to delete the Mozilla1.6 folder under Program Files in Explorer. Should I do anything special about these plugins?
Or simply have them deleted when I delete the Mozilla 1.6 folder? I could not find an uninstall for Shockwave in change or remove programs. I plan to install 1.75 using the zip file.
Also, I would like to install some of that fancy stuff, like the weather program and there is another one which has many features like controlling a lot of stuff. Are those installed like a regular program? Sorry for sounding so ignorant about things I probably did know but forgot.

 

If you are going to stick to the zip file, You can right click|copy the Shockwave plugin, and right click|paste it into the plugins folder of 1.7.5. I always rename the unzipped folder, and do that to the 1.6, otherwise you will replace with the new one (they have the same name). 1.7.5 will already have the default plugin.
As for the Extentions, if you want to go that route, go to the website and pick what you need,. Don't get carried away. And, the files can installed internally, or externally. I sort of like the latter way, because you can download the .xpi file, and install it when you want, or use it again for another version. I usually drag and drop the .xpi file into the desktop shortcut, which cause the program to open, and install the file. But this applies only to the .xpi files that I know of.
I forgot to say that the desktop shortcut should be renamed (right click|Rename).

Just one more detail, and that is: if you do install an extension from the website, you must first enable Software Installation in Preferences:
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Software Installation

I like to do it the way Westsides does, whenever possible.

I don't understand about dropping something onto the desktop and renaming. Could you please explain that a little more? Thanks.

 

Renaming is just that you know what you have. When you unzip, I believe you get a folder with a name like mozilla, no details, and the shortcut is mozilla.exe. You don't have to do a thing, though, but I have so many program that I would get them mixed up, if I would not rename them.
As for the drop, drag and drop is more like a door knock. The file will remain where it was originally, but the program will know what you want. As I said you can do it internally, by just selecting install at the proper extention.
I mentioned the external way, simply because some extentions will not install properly unkless downloaded outside.
But, what Ramona said is a must, but the check mark for Software installation is there by default

 

When doing the upgrade manually, from the zip folder, should I delete the "XUL.mfl" file from my profile before starting the new Mozilla? This is suggested in the Mozilla handbook.

That's affirmative. You might also want to delete your Cache folder, and the history.dat file.

Ok, I have 1.75 working but I'm always nervous when it starts because I don't quite know what to do. My problem now is that I do not have the mail icon on the start menu and want to know how to get it there. The shortcut to Mozilla.exe is already there. Please advise me on this issue. Thanks.

 

I figured it out. Right clicked start menu and then opened and was given the choice of putting Mozilla and the Mail on the menu. Thanks.

Congrats on a successful install! When you use the Zip File, there is no entry in the Start Menu for Mail or Profile Manager. If you want to open Mail separately, then create a second Mozilla Shortcut on the Desktop and to the Shortcut Target path, add a -mail command line argument.

To access Profile Manager, add a -p command line argument.

DSL Speed Check

I don't know if the Verizon DSL system is off tonight, but my download speed is slower now with v1.75 than it was with v1.6. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if this slowdown is permanent.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? Is there a way to increase the speed?

I have high speed cable, and Mozilla is very fast on downloads, although Firefox is just a tad faster. I just downloaded a 700 KB file in Mozilla and it took 10 seconds. The same file in Firefox took 1 second. Since this is a brand new install, your download manager should be clean as a whistle, so no problem there. It could very well be your provider. What kind of download speeds are you experiencing?
