    Hi,
    Dell XPS E-series (DM061)
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) CPU 6400 @ 2.13 GHz
RAM: 2.13 GHz (total physical: 2,048 MB) available: 1.49 GB
    OS: Windows XP SP3
    Internet connection: high-speed (cable)

I need to upgrade to I.E. 7 (for a temporary project)
    Current version is 6.0.2900

    1. Could someone please recommend a reliable Web site I can download it from.
(I cannot find it on Microsoft's Web site).

2 Is it possible to revert back to I.E. 6 (My current version) if necessary?

    Thank you
Sorry if this has been posted but but I cannot find it....

Hi tanya. IE7 is better than IE6 but most people have upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 which is even better and more secure than IE7.

I would recommend downloading and installing Internet Explorer 8 from here, Internet Explorer 8.

    Using IE 6

I am using IE 6. I am having an ongoing "test ", to see what happens when I use IE 6.
So far, I have surfed the web, and thats all! Nothing bad has happened.

After reformat & reinstall I have been using almost daily IE 6 on Win XP SP1 for one year and 17 days!
And I dont even have any updates!
I must say, I am beginning to doubt this dangerousnes...

It's your call, but IE6 has numerous exploits, documented by independent security sites as well as Microsoft.

A large part of protecting your system is to use common sense however that cannot prevent the nasties every time (we all know the human brain is not infallible).

Bottom line, you take the risks for yourself but if you ever have cause to know my email address (or any other data pertaining to me) please do not store it on your computer. I'm pretty sure that anyone in your contacts list would feel the same if they knew the risks you were taking. ;)

    EDIT

The Register ran an article a couple of years ago...

Digital delinquents thrive on IE6 exploits

Be aware that MS hasn't released patches for IE6 for some time.

Not to mention, that ONE computer using IE6 and not being hit (yet), proves nothing.

    Using IE 6

    Hi,

Thanks for the heads up, and yeah, I know one computer not being hit doenst really prove anything.
I have always tried to protect my system using common sense, eg.I dont have any torrenzt software on my computer. I dont download music, movies from web.
I have set my browser security settings as instructed here, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm Isnt configuring browser settings that way really an essential part of avoiding infections? And I guess, a lot of people dont bother to do so.

So as a default, I have active-X:s, scripting, Java etc. disabled and I have only a small number of web pages in my Trusted sites-group.
So at the moment I have been using IE 6 for one year and 17 days without problems, Spybot S&D has never found anything suspicious from my computer, except some tracking cookie, I dont even get any spam e-mail. They are sometimes quite entertaining actually, I know, because I get them a LOT at my work computer.

My only malware-experience (it was annoying) so far was getting infected with IE-defender back in -06 or -07, I was running IE 7 and had all the MS updates, but I was just so clueless back then.
Does anyone remember that IE defender malware, it tried to cheat the user of infected computer to buy their "AV-software ". I am glad I did a google search, about it, and realized what it was before paying for them. There was quite a heated conversation going on at the castlecops website, when IE defender infections were current issue.

And As I mentioned, I also dont have any updates, I have SP1. I remember seeing conversations about the necessity of updates, and I´ve seen some more experienced users saying that they are necessarily not so crucial.
So after reformat and reinstall, I decided to see what happens, if I skip the entire updating hassle. I can let you know, if something happens.

I agree. Even if you browse the web safely and take all of the necessary precautions to help mitigate you chances of getting infected, your computer could still get compromised. You just have a much lower chance of getting infected IF you keep your computer up to date.

You may not have any problems now but all it takes is one wrong click of the mouse when your browsing the web and you can easily get nailed. Thats not worth the risk in my opinion. I'd prefer to be safe than sorry so thats why I always tell my clients to keep their computers up to date with the latest Windows patches. Sure its a minor inconvenience to have to install a lot of updates but if thats what it takes to make a difference of whether your computer gets infected or not then its worth the time.

If you want to browse the web running outdated software with a bit of risk involved just because you think you don't need to install any patches then be my guest.
