My old system is a Pent2 300Mhz. The mainboard is a Gigabyte GA686LX slot 1.
Does anybody know where I could find a list of CPU's that would be suitable for my mainboard?
Given its age now, it should be possible to get a modest performance increase for not much outlay.

    Hi Ausfred,

The place to start looking is your motherboard manual - if you don't have one log onto the Gigabyte website and search for your board.

In all honesty the chances of finding another (faster) processor for your board is about the same as finding hen's teeth on eBay :D

The best method of increasing performance is to add more RAM - details as to capacity in the manual or log onto www.crucial.com and run through their memory selector.

    Hi Ausfered,

I think your limiting factor with the GA686LX board is its use of the 440 LX chipset.

The 440LX chipset only supported up to a 66Mhz frontside bus. Starting with the PII 350 all slot 1 processors used at least a 100Mhz or faster frontside bus. To use a processor with the 100 Mhz bus required a board with the 440BX chipset.

So Slot 1 boards that had the 440BX chipset were usually able to support the faster Pentium II and Pentium III processors that used a 100 Mhz or higher bus.

However, Slot 1 boards that used the 440LX chipset, like the GA686LX, were limited to the 66Mhz based processors. The fastest slot 1 of the 66Mhz group is the PII-333. Likewise since the board itself doesn't support faster than 66 Mhz I doubt a convertor will work either - that's probably why the board isn't on the list that Daddad provided a link for.

Replacing a 300 Mhz processor with a 333 will give you marginal, if any, improvement in performance. As PeteC suggested, adding ram will probably give you the best perofmance return for your money.

    Cheers,

    ICE
