I am looking for advice on upgrading some hardware in my SBS 2003 server, I inherited the server and I want to increase the memory from 2GB to 3GB, will this pose any problems, as I heard that you can use a /3GB switch with more than 2GB of RAM, but i am not sure if it by Microsoft. I run my machine as a domain controller and Exchange server.

Additionally, the server has a spare hard drive that is not being used, I was wondering if it is too late to set the server up to run SATA RAID. Not sure it had to be done when first installing the O/S or it can still be done by using software.

Any advice would be a big help, Thanks.

The datasheet for SBS2003 R2 gives a maximum RAM of 4Gb, so I don't think there should be a problem going to 3Gb.

You definitely won't be able to use a RAID system that uses striping (for example, RAID 0 or 5) to create a new RAID using an existing disk.

Therefore, I presume you want RAID 1 (mirroring). You can set up a mirror to an existing volume with software. Have a look at these Microsoft articles on Mirroring.

you only need /3gb if you have a single process (exe) that needs more then 2gb

32bit windows limits a single process to 2gb of ram.
