I am thinking of upgrading my 98SE system to XP Home shortly.
My 98 installation was from an OEM disk which I purchased separately when I put together my computer.

I intend performing a clean install on a new hard drive and slaving my old drive to it once everything is up and running. If I buy an XP upgrade disk (full version - NOT an OEM one) will it accept my OEM 98SE disk as proof of a previous system?

I recall reading somewhere that Microsoft don't like upgrades from OEM disks when the OEM OS is not already loaded on to your system.

    Thanks
    Rick

Is the OEM disk a windows 98 disk or is it a restore disk. If it's an OEM win98 cd and not a restore disk I think it'll accept it. I've never tried it myself with XP but I used to do a clean install of 98 using an upgrade disk and an OEM win95 disk. Never had a problem. I'm assuming this is one of those OEM disks that you can purchase from a place like Newegg so long as you buy hardware along with it.

    Thanks for the advice guys.
It is an OEM 98SE cd and not a restore disk.

However I think I'll follow Steve's suggestion and do a clean install of 98SE on to the new drive and follow it with the XP upgrade installation. Seems the safest route...
