Following an upgrade to Win XP pro my computer will not boot up.

I get as far as the nice picture of the field and maybe an icon or two then the automatic I want to send a fault report to Microsoft for an Explorer.exe fault. The message displayed is:
Application Error. The instruction at 0x100034f4 referenced memory at 0x006e6f63. The memory could not be "read ".

This is followed by 2 or 3 more windows for explorer fault report requests which I cannot send as I have no internet connection on this computer.

On clicking on don't send the icons disappear and the machine stops.

Control Alt Delete brings up the Task Manager and I can shutdown from there.

    However I have noted that the following Processes are running;
    TASKMGR.EXE
    MGABA.EXE SYSTEM
    SPOOLSV.EXE SYSTEM
    SVCHOST.EXE LOCAL SERVICE
    SVCHOST.EXE NETWORK SERVICE
    SVCHOST.EXE SYSTEM
    SVCHOST.EXE SYSTEM
    LSASS.EXE SYSTEM
    SERVICES.EXE SYSTEM
    WINLOGON.EXE SYSTEM
    Csrss.exe SYSTEM
    SMSS.EXE SYSTEM
    System SYSTEM
    System idle process SYSTEM

Any help on repair of this computer would be appreciated.

It is possible that the error means just what it says and that you have a section of bad physical memory.

First thing I'd try would be to remove all but one memory stick and see if the problem goes away. If not, replace that stick with another.

If no help there, try a tech support session with Microsoft. They are pretty good at solving this sort of thing.

    XP upgrade fix.

    Newt,

You are correct I had a bad upgrade and corruption had set in somewhere. I have no idea why or how it happened.

I have fixed the problem by reloading XP from the CD to another physical drive on the machine. This enabled me to delete XP from my C drive and reload it again to the C drive. All is now well and I have managed to keep all my work.

The reason I reloaded back to the C drive is this machine is used for video editing and I want the operating system on a different drive to my editing software to minimize possible conflicts.

    Kindest regards,
    Nargh.
