I've been looking at upgrading my MSOffice97. Is it possible to upgrade to Office 2003 or is it necessary to do the full version? Would like to save the $$$ on the upgrade version over the full version if possible.

Yes, you can buy an Office 2003 upgrade. How much the upgrade disk costs depends on which edition you buy...Professional, Small Business or Standard.

The comparison of each is on this Microsoft page.

A Google search for "Microsoft Office 2003 upgrade" gave me a little over three million hits, the first few pages mostly containing links to places to buy it.

Thanks Miz, I do know the cost depends on the version - ie the particular edition. My question is "is it possible to do an UPGRADE from an Office 97 edition to an Office 2003 edition." I've done upgrades from one version of a product to the next most recent version, but I haven't skipped a version. Sooooo, I'm looking for advice on whether it's better to do an upgrade or to go with a full version.

    All advice is appreciated. ;)

    MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office 2003 is available as a non-upgrade version (full version) and as an upgrade version. To install the upgrade version, one of the following requirements must be met:

    • A valid qualifying product, such as Microsoft Office XP, Office 2000, or Office 97, is installed on your computer.

Thanks Steve, I know that I have to have a legit copy already for an upgrade version to work properly.

Again, my question is not whether it can be done, but whether it is more advisable to do an upgrade or a full version. I have heard that problems arise from upgrades where they are less likely from full versions. Everyone here has a lot of experience, so I'm asking for advice.

There are some instances (OS for example) where a clean install is probably gonna work better than an upgrade. Sometimes. Often enough to make it worth doing for me, at least.

Software suites and MS Office in particular haven't seemed to suffer from those same sorts of issues though. I do upgrades to Office versions and it works fine.

In the case of a big jump like the one you plan from 97 to 2003, it will basically amount to a new install anyway. It will mainly keep the settings that still apply and a few other of your personal preferences but the applications and supporting files will be all new.
