Kids computer running 2x sticks of 256MB = 512MB total. Would like to remove 1 stick and replace with Kingston 1GB DDR2 SDRAM Desktop Memory (KVR533D21GR).
The following information from SWI ...

I would like to replace one of the above sticks with the following ....
Kingston Technologies 1GB DDR2 SDRAM Desktop Memory (KVR533D21GR)
The Kingston chip appears to be a good match to present memory on computer.... correct ???
    Thanks

    Kingston search

The compatible Kingston 1GB stick would be part number: KTH-XW4200AN/1G

    Thank you Whiskeyman.
Following your link, it is the correct memory stick.
BUT, now I do have one concern, since this is DDR2 memory. Most recommend matching size, speed, and brands, but not mandatory. (see Dual-channel architecture DDR/DDR2 SDRAM), the preferred being "Pairs / Kits ". This computer is NOT a gaming machine (kids prefer console platforms). This is why I only want to add one stick of memory (1QB) to mate with the 256MB. It's current config of 2 (x) 256MB for total of 512MB is doggy, since it has to share memory back to video card (256MB). We needed another family computer, but were not ready to commit to Vista / hardware costs, maybe in a year or more.

It isn't necessary to match the sticks if you are not interested in dual channel capability. You should be fine with the 1GB + 256MB sticks.

Would like to order a Kingston memory chip.
This is (LINK A) what Kingston recommends for kids computer.

This is (LINK B) the memory I would like to purchase.
This is (LINK C) the corresponding description from Kingston for chip being sold at LINK B.
I talked to Newegg, and they said they do not have technical skills to recommend any memory chips.
Thnaks for any help or suggestions.

HP/Compaqs are fussy with memory. You do need to buy the memory that is compatible. I have been upgrading a slew of HP and Compaq PCs for that last few weeks and can attest to their obstinate demeanor with memory sticks. I had to pay almost $30 more for the compatible memory over the Kingston ValueRam. I tested this by using the ValueRam from my system and the HP/Compaqs would not start even though the memory was tha same spec.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Have found two locations for the following memory ...
    1GB Compaq PC2-4200 non-ECC DDR2 non-Registered DIMM (p/n 382510-001) for $89.98 plus shipping.
This should keep HP and the kids happy.
Thanks again Whiskeyman, you saved me a lot of grief.
