    BACKGROUND:
I inherited this network several years ago and have gone through a lot of On the Job Training. I’m not exactly sure how to ask the right questions, but have included a lot of information below and would appreciate any input you deem appropriate to my situation.

I have 6 servers on a WinNT network using static IP addresses for 42 employees & about 95% XP clients with the rest being W2K. My goal is to “upgrade” our network to Win2003 R2 Standard x64.

*EDIT* I think I got carried away and I am not going to install x64, since I have 32-bit systems & they sent me both versions. So, I have Disc 1 (June 2006) & Disc 2 (Feb 2006) & say Vol Lic Prod Key Required. I also have another disk that is Feb 2006 (Windows Management Services 1.0 with Service Pack1) Is it ok that my Disc 1 is newer than Disc 2?? (Strange...) What is the solitary disk? */EDIT*

I found some links in here & downloaded “Migrating from WinNT to Win2003 server” as well as FSMigrate.msi

    1) 3ea. W2K
    o AntiVirus server - PowerEdge 500SC
    o WWW Site 1 in DMZ – PowerEdge 600SC
    o WWW Site 2 in DMZ – PowerEdge SC420
    2) 3ea. WinNT File Servers (SCSI Drives)
    o #1 is PDC and WINS – PowerEdge 600SC
    o #2 is BDC – PowerEdge 600SC
o #3 is also used as Print Server – PowerEdge 600SC

Our internet goes through a switch to provide 2 VLANs which is maintained by our ISP. Our phones go through one while our internet goes through the other. This also means that while I have the main network down, I can connect a laptop to the phone VLAN and use DHCP to research any issues/problems, etc. (which I have tested prior).

I have also printed part of “Sherwood Forest” from MS TechNet about installing/upgrading 2003 R2.

    My “thinking” is:
    1) Make CERTAIN I have for ALL servers:
    a. CURRENT BACKUPS
    b. NIC info
    c. Drivers
    d. Server names
    e. Usernames
    f. User groups
    g. User privileges, etc.
    h. Printer info
    i. Printer installation disks, etc.
    2) Double check #1
    3) Take down entire network
    4) Pray
    5) Reformat WinNT server #1
    6) Install new OS
    7) Determine network/internet access
    8) Security updates
    9) Repeat from #4 for WinNT server #2 & #3
    10) Determine relationships between servers
    11) Test network connection to new server in here somewhere
    12) Work through upgrading the Win2K servers

    Thanks anyway...

Well, I'm either so far off base that you've all died from laughter...OR...it's close enough that you see nothing that will kill me. HA!

Anyway, I will start the process this evening & work through the weekend. Hopefully all will go well... :)
