upgrade from W98 to XP

I had a phone call from a friend who has updated from W98se to XP Pro but found it unstable, just found out he did not format hard drive from fat32 to NTFS, apart from a 3rd party product can he format within XP, I told him maybe not. Any help would be great.

Yes, can be done thru XP: enter NTFS into Help and Support search box, comes up with Convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt

However, I'd be supprised if this is the cause of the instability. Your friend would have been better off doing a clean install.

Thanks for the information, he tried through the help file and the system crashed. I did a remote scan of his computer and found "default@serving-sys.com/ (spam) on his machine with a dialer incorporated as he is nearly 2000Kms from me recommended he do clean install which he is doing now so I hope all goes well for him.
