I am using a computer equipped with an AMD K-6 350 Mhz CPU. The computer is being used to access the Internet on a broadband cable modem.
Would it be worth it to upgrade the CPU ? What could be used and what would you recommend ? What other aprts of the computer should be assessed for stopgaps ?

    thanks,

    S. Chamish

A 350-MHz processor will process information faster than it can be downloaded from the internet, regardless of your connection method--dialup, DSL or cable doesn't matter. You will see a decrease in the time it takes to open programs; but, that is about all. If all you do is the internet, my opinion is an upgrade would not be worth the effort, let alone the money.

Having written all that, there will be an increase in performance across the board in almost all other operations, how much of an increase in performance will depend entirely in how much of an upgrade you do. If you increase processor speed, think also about getting a board that supports the higher bus speeds. If you go with an 1800-MHz processor and a board that supports only a 100-MHz bus speed, you will not see as great a performance increase as with the same processor on a board that supports bus speeds two- or three times higher.

Aside from the internet connection, the speed of the hard disk is the next bottleneck to deal with. If you have an IDE system, go for a drive with a spin rate of 7200 RPM and at least two megs of on-disk cache, also known as buffer.

If all you are really using this machine for is Internet access, then leave it be. It is doing just fine as is.

In this or similiar forums, you will tend to find a lot of "Power Users ".........Like me.
    But,
I think THE most important thing to remember about a computer is........ "Does it do what I want it to do????" Ask yourself this?!?!

If the answer to that question is "Yes "......then leave it alone, save your money and enjoy. Buy the wife, kids or yourself something you really DO need or want.

Again, most of us upgrade, NOT because we need to, but because we WANT to. Don't spend your money if you already have what you want. Just define your computer goals.
