My kids were given an IBM aptiva that had win 95 preloaded. I need to have win 98 installed before they can have the internet.

I have a win98 full instll disk that someone gave me. Is there anyway to load win98 without the registration information - if yes. how.

    i feel your pain

unfortunatly, the CD has probaly been used by your friend. "registering" windows is a way for microsoft to make sure a CD is used only once. There is no way to avoid registration as I belive if you don't windows 98 will automaticlly lockup after a few days (well, that's what XP does at least)

If you're talking about registering it after you install it, win98 doesn't require it. If you're talking about the product key you need while installing, no, there's no way around it. Well, there may be but certainly no legal way.

Don't know if skip will post back with an answer for you or not but I can think of one reason for ya. I know a couple of people who have satellite internet access. One of them was using win95 and had to upgrade to at least 98 before he could use it. The other had 98 already but that was one of the first things they were told when they went to satellite. There may be some other types of hardware that require 98 also. My guess is that something along these lines is the reason for needing the update.

If you are referring to the Product Key that you are asked to enter at the beginning of the 98 install, and you do not have it, and your friend lost it or forgotten it, no help can be given to you on this here.
If you referring to product registration when you go to the windows update site, MS no longer requires it.
Now, here is a real good question, do you have 98 Second Edition, or the original version? If it is Second Edition, it will say so on the CD. If not, it will just say Windows 98.
The reason for this question is that a lot of software available today and hardware items such as USB just are not being written for the original version, and will not work correctly.

If you don't have a Win98 CD key, you could just buy a used copy of Win98 as a way of getting one. Sure you end up with another CD, but having a backup isn't a bad thing. Check auction sites to see if you can find a good deal. Or do you know anyone who has recently moved from 98 to (whatever)?

Another way is to buy a license only, if you can find someone selling it. Just be sure you get it for the same edition as your CD.
