    Hi all,
Can somebody please let me know if or how Windows 98 can be upgraded from a 98SE full install disc... or if instructions exist somewhere?

I have a full SE install disc and don't want to uninstall 98 to use it, just install over 98 if it's possible. When I go to upgrade to SE, Windows 98 tells me to use the Upgrade disc, not the Full Install, the installation process then stops. Thank you for any shove in the right direction.

    Hello milwiron,

I think what you have is a OEM full SE which you can't upgrade with.

Can only do that with a retail full install or as per the message, an SE upgrade.

    Regards - Charles

To use the full install disk, rename the file named win.com in your windows folder. Reboot and boot from the Win98 CD and install Windows. Just make sure when it asks where you want to intall it that it's pointed to your current Windows folder. It may say Windows.000 or something like that. Make sure it just says Windows.

Remember what you rename win.com to. If something should happen to go wrong after you reboot and before you get Windows installed, you can rename it back to win.com from DOS and hopefully boot back into Windows. Once you rename it, Windows won't boot until you've completed the install or renamed the file back.
