I just upgraded from Win98 to Windows 2000. I use bellsouth.net as my ISP. The newly installed Win 2000 found my modem and now allows me to connect to the internet via bellsouth.net. However, when I load internet explorer (5) I can't get any web pages to load up. I have made the recommended changes like "find my DNS automatically" as per bellsouth's instructions but still am having no luck.

    My rig:
    AMD 1.1Ghz
    192 MB Ram
    External US Robotics 56k modem

    Should I upgrade to IE6?
Can I download the full IE6 and put it on a cd since I can't connect at home?
    How do I do this?

I downloaded modem drivers but they're probably the same ones I already have.

Should I do a clean install of Win 2000 and blow away everything that 98 left behind? This is a pain but if its my only recourse I guess I have no other choice.

Your comments and suggestions are appreciated.

I forgot to add that I can't download any of the service pack upgrades since I can't connect. Can I download these in their entirety and burn on a cd at work? How?

IE5 should work and if it doesn't then IE6 probably won't either.

To see if you do have DNS issues, try putting http://195.188.113.225/ in your browser's address line. It should take you to a test page for an apache web server. If it does then you for sure have a name resolution issue of some sort. In that case do the following and see what happens.

    - rename your hosts file to host.old
    - start~run~ipconfig /flushdns

Then try the browser again with normal named links.
