    Hello,

I am going to try and update my modem drivers myself but I am wondering....would I need to uninstall the present one first, before I run the set up file and if so how?

I use Windows 98 and the modem is a Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem.

    Thanks for any help given.

Download the driver and go for it.
No need to uninstall previous versions.
The update usually goes smoothly for MOT56k's.

Thank you for the reply reboot.

I did do it, but now I seem to be getting disconnected quite easily. Dial up. Any idea why that might be happening:confused: .

Newer is not always better. Go back to your old driver if possble.
There are other things you can do, but a rollback is the best option.

    Maybe this.
Go into Device Manager, go to the Modems entry, expand that one, double click the Motorola entry. A window opens, click on Driver, then click on Update Driver. Now click on Next, now select Display a list of drivers in a specific location, then click on Next. You may get a little windows stating it is making a driver database. Then you should have two dated listing to choose from.

Right click My Computer, select Properties, then click on Device Manager tab.

    Thank you so very much!

I did it just as you suggested and found only one driver there, the current one. So I guess that's it?

    Thanks

No, that is not it. You can still install the older drivers, but you must have them where you know where they are. This time instead of Display a list of ..., choose Search for a better driver... , then you will get a choice of Floppy, CDRom, Microsoft Update and Specify a location. Make the appropiate choice, windows will examine the drivers and you may get the message that the newer one is a better choice, choose to install the other drivers instead.

Ok, I did it, but for some reason I only end up with the same one. I don't understand why I'm not finding others. I'll just hold out with this one I guess.

    Thanks.

You were to put a floppy, or CD, or know which folder on the drive contained the old drivers. If you do not give a location, of course it will only find the current drivers. When drivers are installed, a INF file is used. When you updated, your old INF file was overwritten with the new.
Perhaps the old drivers can be located on one of the following links.

After reading all the replies of the good people here trying to help this Lady, I would like to make an observation.
It seems that her original complaint was/is the random and often disconnects.
It also appears that after she updated her modem driver, the disconnect problem remained about the same.
    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Back when I used a dialup connection to my ISP,
"soft modems" ie. Winmodems were nortorious for disconnects due to noise on the telephone line.
Changing to a controller based hardware modem most times cured the problem.
The Motorola modem she is using is a softmodem (Winmodem)

Nowadays, whenever I build up a computer for friends who have a dialup ISP, I always install a US Robotics hardware modem.

The Lady states her location is Trinidad.
I have no idea of the quality of the telephone lines might be there but if they have noise high enough in magnitude, that may be her main problem and not a driver problem.

    Just my $.02 :)

    Daddad,

I think you have hit the nail on the head.

Someone from the phone company who I spoke to after markp62's last reply, told me also that that might be the problem (noise on the line) and that I should have the phone company check it out. This I'll do. Just what you've mentioned is what my problem is. Disconnections with past modem and the present as well.

Thanks markp62 for your patience with me. I appreciate it very much.:)

    Thanks Daddad for your reply.:)

As I've said I'll call the company and see what they find.

    Thanks Mom for posting back.
Your problem seemed to me to be something I have run into in the past a few times :)

Please post back if your telephone company is able to help you.

If you are interested in obtaining a good, reliable controller based (hardware) modem, I have used this one with success:

    http://www.shentech.com/3cuus56kvpep.html

This modem is a PCI modem and supports the newer V92 protocol as well as the V90 protocol.

They should be available most anywhere.

    Thanks Daddad,

I'd try and remember to let you know if the phone company is able to help.

Fact is, at the moment I won't be able to purchase a new modem so I sure hope that they can help.

    Talk to you later.

    :)

In dealing with a phone company and line noise, do not mention that you are having problems with an internet connection. They tend to turn a deaf ear toward these type of complaints. However, it is more effective to say that you are having fax machine connection problems, I think this has something to do with possible revenue coming in from long distance connections.

Motorolla SM56's take a (fairly) standard AT command set.
In the extra settings box, of advanced modem propterties in device mangler, put this: S10=50S11=50
Restart and see if your connection is better.

Ok, the guys from the phone company checked my line out and said that all is well. :(

Umm, reboot, please bear with me but where do I need to go to do what you're suggesting I do here?

Thanks for all the help and patience. It's really appreciated.
