Unsure about updating the BIOS on one of my machines that is using 2 Racks one is loaded with Windows XP Pro and the other is Windows 7 Ultimate.
The board is a Abit socket 939 running Opteron 180.
I have not been able to do the update in Win 7 as I was not able to use the old Dr.DOS Floppy, my question is will 7 still boot if I do the update with XP or will it render Win 7 un-bootable.

The question I would ask is - is there a pressing need to update the BIOS? Does the revised BIOS include new features which are of benefit to you?

IMO updating the BIOS should in no way affect the bootability of the OS - the BIOS has done it's 'thing' before the OS loads.

Hi and thanks Pete, yes I think that this BIOS update could be useful in this case. The Opterone 180 is not included in the CPU list in the earlier BIOS's . I think that this BIOS update would help with this CPU.
You say that if I update the BIOS with the XP rack inserted that when I change over to the Win 7 OS there wont be any problems like having to do a repair install as I don't want to have to go as far as that.

NB. Yes Pete as retiredlearner has reported in another thread "My System" is not expanding here either.

I would not anticipate a problem in that area.

    Bill,

The other thing to keep in mind is that you can save your "old" BIOS and if things don't go your way with Win7 (highly doubtful as Pete has articulated), you should be able to flash back to the original BIOS.

    ;)
