Went to Windows Update to review my update history looking to see if I could find any updates that were uninstallable on my machine, to download for future use. In the process I found that Kb970430. kb971737, kb974318, and kb974392 had not installed properly. I had them downloaded in a folder so I just reinstalled them. According to my update history they had not installed. I just checked again just before creating this thread.

However, I went to the Windows folder and found these four updates in their $NtUninstall folder. They looked to be complete as I compared them to the other folders. Can I use the folders to uninstall these updates I'm having trouble with and then reinstall them to see if that solves the problem? If so, how would I go about it?

    Hi, DugE,

Had this problem once with my lappy running XP Home.

Went directly to MS....we pay for this, remember, and they followed up immeidately and efficiently.

They now have interactive tools to, if you give permission, get data from yr system and you no longer have to send them attchments.

MS has people who only deal with Hotfix Hell. They know what they are about, and again, can get the data they need from yr system to troubleshoot and help you fix the problem

    You can ......

Right click on the $NtUninstall folder > Open

    Open the spuninist folder

    Run spuninst.exe

The post by pccare.... above is summarised in this MS KB article .....

You cannot install some updates or programs

See here, post #17 which is a copy of a reply from MS ....

Ok, before I jump the gun here I looked in the Add/Remove section and found all four updates installed. I was going to uninstall them and reinstall but when I tried I got a pop up telling me that certain programs will not run if I uninstall, ie, FF and Hijack This are two that was listed when I tried to uninstall kb974392. I didn't try any of the other ones yet.

So if they are installed why is WU saying they aren't? And no, I haven't tried any of the above suggestions yet. Waiting to see if this makes a difference.

    Finally :)

It took a little work but they are now installed according to Wu.

I disconnected from the internet. Went to Add/Removed and uninstalled all the updates, restarting computer after each uninstall. Shut down my av (avast).

Reinstalled the updates, restarting after each install. Connected to the internet and went to WU and checked on updates. No go. I checked the links which were posted above and the one that worked was the link to another post here. The one Pete posted.

I stopped services, renamed the Software Distribution folder to Sdold. Then restarted services. Disconnected from the internet. Opened IE. Couldn't connect to homepage because no internet. Disabled av. Connected to internet. Clicked link on IE to go to WU. Installed updates. Restarted computer which enabled my av. Went back to WU and checked on installed updates. All Ok. Wasn't sure if I needed to disable my av but I give it a try. The updates installed. That's all that mattered anyway.

So....thanks to everyone for the links to check and the prompt response.

I marked this thread resolved but I leave with a question: The updates showed to be installed in Add/Remove. But I had to uninstall them from there. If they showed to be installed in Add/Remove, how come they didn't show installed in WU? ( Peter Piper picked a peck.....)
