Browser is Firefox v.17. OS XP. Backup browser MSIE. Alternate browser Comodo Dragon
MS updates for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 will not install. Updates for v. 2, 3, 4 have installed.
Do I need .NET 1.1 for other operations, or can I remove the program to relieve this error message?
All other systems and software appear to be operating fine.

Hi Goaglen. When the .NET Framework updates fail to install, do you get an error message?

Have you tried downloading and installing the updates manually from the Microsoft website?

I would first try performing a clean boot in Windows XP and then see if the updates install. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state.

If performing a clean boot in Windows XP does not work then take a look here, Error message when you try to install the.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Update from the Windows Update site on a Windows XP-based computer: "Updates were unable to be successfully installed ".

I have been trying to find a solution for a couple of weeks for this problem.
I am not computer-savvy so am wary of tapering with clean boot etc.
Surely microsoft should be addressing this as many users appear to be suffering the same problem.

Does not work. Wrote detailed reply to article above and lost copy of it.
Process stops working at registry and System32 levels.
Delete mscoree.dll error msg programs depend on file to work
Delete Framework folder not allowed; deleted subfiles .NET 1.0 & .NET 1.4
Reinstall of .NET 1.1 stops with error message:
"Please set registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\InstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location "

Remove all versions of .Net Framework by running the .Net Framework cleanup tool which is located here, .NET Framework Cleanup Tool.

Once all versions of .Net Framework have been removed, reboot the computer and reinstall .Net Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 4.5.

Personally I wouldn't reinstall all these. You only need them if there is software on your system that requires them, and you'll be prompted by the software if you try to run it without .NET installed.

    On my XP I "only" have 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 installed.

I guess the versions of .Net Framework vary from system to system because on some fully patched Windows XP machines I have seen all of those versions installed excluding 4.5.

Also when you run Windows Update it does recommend that you install .Net Framework 4.0 and updates for the other versions. I always make sure all versions of .Net Framework are installed even if they aren't always needed just in case a user runs a program that requires a higher version of .Net Framework to be installed.

It offers .NET 4 and 1.1 as "Optional Software ", but I hardly ever install any "Optional" that Windows Update suggests I do.

I wouldn't. Why would I load more unneeded stuff on my system?

    Source: MSDN

So one could install version 4 and it should be all you need. If you have software installed that would want an older version you'd be prompted.

I do install most optional updates except for hardware drivers, Microsoft Silverlight and Bing desktop from Windows Update.

Wow I did not know that about forward and backward compatibility with .Net Framework. Why doesn't Microsoft then just update .Net Framework and have one version that you install that replaces all older versions instead of having 3 or 4 versions that need to be updated and installed individually?

Probably the same reason why Oracle only recently got their act together and manage to uninstall older Java versions when you upgrade

    maybe fixed?

I followed SpywareDR's advice and ran Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool .

The little yellow shield with the updates to be installed alert disappeared from the bottom right bar. 24 hours later it hasn't re-appeared so I'm hoping that the problem is fixed.:)

    whoops, I spoke too soon

another 24 hours have passed and the yellow shield was back with seven updates to install.

    Five installed while two failed.
Guess which two....the same two that have been hanging around and failing for a couple of weeks.

Personally, I uninstall them (.NET) all, and just maybe install 3.5 or 4, IF I had software that needed it.

Good change you don't even need at all.

    need net framework?

If I knew that I didn't need net framework, I'd uninstall it and forget about it.
I just don't know whether I need it or not.

Just uninstall all versions of .Net Framework and install .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.0 only.

As Arie said, if a program that you installed requires an earlier version of .Net Framework to be installed then that program will tell you.

I am running the .NET Framework Repair Tool and reinstalling .NET software. The process will take a while. Will mark resolved when it is. Christmas is a busy time and courtesy is observed when work schedule resumes.
