I recently installed a program (iExpress, I think, or maybe iTunes - doesn't matter) which required .NET Framework 4, which I didn't have on board yet, so I went ahead and installed it. Then Windows Update (unsurprisingly) told me I needed a string of five or six updates which referred to .NET Framework 4, so I installed these, too. Everything looked fine, installation successfully completed, etc., and I went back to my normal (non-admin) account.

But the next time I needed to log in as admin, there was the "yellow shield" warning that updates were ready to be downloaded. The updates proposed were just two of the several .NET Framework 4 ones I had already installed, but I went ahead and re-installed them. Now every time I log in as Admin, the same advisory pops up, and it's always the same two updates - KB 2656351 and 2487367. I've now installed them three times, but still I get the yellow shield. Each time I can watch the installation running in Task Manager, using about 90% of CPU capacity, so they're certainly doing something - I just don't know what.

I've searched the forum with these two KB numbers and found other OPs having problems with one or the other, but those seem to be malware problems which I don't believe I have, as a full MSE scan reports no positive hits. It's just that, although they go through all the symptoms of installing and report "successfully installed ", they're still reported missing next time I log in as Admin.

    Grateful for any advice.

Hi Geoffrey, Have you checked in > Control Panel > Add & Remove Programs > to see if they are listed?

It might pay to un-install from there and shut down. Re-Boot and see if the message is shown again, then do a re-install. Neil.

Hi Neil - thanks for advice.

Both are listed in the group ".NET Framework 4 Extended ", but only 2656351 is listed in the group ".NET Framework 4 Client Profile ".

But when I tried to delete one of them, I got a warning window that other users are logged on to this computer and if you try to delete it may not fully delete (rough translation from Italian). But Task Manager shows that only one user (me) is logged in. So I didn't continue with the deletion yet, and await further suggestions.

OK, since there were no other suggestions immediately, while waiting I went ahead and followed Neil's suggestion in post #2. I disinstalled both KBs (only needed to do one each, because disinstalling the one which appeared in two groups removed both instances), rebooted, reinstalled both KBs and rebooted. It didn't work.

The problem has not gone away: I still get the "yellow shield" warning about updates available, and when I click on the shield icon to see what they ae, it's still the same two.

I need to leave the house now and shall therefore not reply immediately to any further posts, but promise to come back to this thread within 24 hours at the outside.

Hi, Doc, and thanks. I'll try that and report back.

UPDATE: I got a reply from the support desk, but they evidently hadn't read my query (almost word for word post #1 above, minus the reference to this forum), because they suggested two downloads which gave me the response that the suggested agent was already installed, and then suggested installing SPs 1, 2 and 3, which I had already specified were installed as soon as they were available. So I reported back to them and am awaiting their next move.

Did the program Iexpress or ITunes work after you installed the .NET that it wanted?

    Hi, MrBill. Yes, both worked.

The solution suggested by Microsoft email support worked. It involved eliminating every trace of all versions of .NET Framework, not just using Control Panel > Add & Remove Programs, but using a specific cleanup tool (http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-file.ashx...-90-44-93/dotnetfx_5F00_cleanup_5F00_tool.zip), and then reinstalling .NET Framework (plus 27 updates!) from scratch.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions, especially to SpywareDr who made me aware of the free support for update issues.

See this problem with .NET Framework quite a few times before. Never needed anything to use to delete or clean them up. Just uninstalled them and went back and re downloaded them and all was well after that.

Glad you got it resolved anyways.
