I checked through the threads & couldn't quite find what I was looking for so I apologize if this a duplicate problem. First some background, I have been downloading updates for windows 98 & Internet Explorer (I currently have IE version 6.0.2800.1106) on a fairly regular basis. I recently had a friend reinstall win98 on my hard drive so I could download a new driver for my scanner (which is not hooked up because it turns out it is defective). I also have AVG antivirus (free version) and SmartBlock (free version). I have spybot, adaware, regclean, and easycleaner installed. I had a problem with an unwanted link in my computer that I received info on deleting through this site. After following those directions I got an error upon booting up that said something like java object not found. This continued for about a week. This no longer appears. Now the problem, I cannot get most pictures in websites to load. I get either a red x or a box with a multicolored emblem in the corner. Where do I go from here?

Yes I checked Internet options, etc. from prev. threads

I tried the site listed in another thread and downloaded the program there. Rebooted. No luck. And yes, the show pictures, animations, etc. are enabled in tools > internet options > advanced.

How do I check file associations?

The first part was o.k. Western European is set as default and the show pictures is checked in the multimedia of advanced internet options. Next it says to check for graphics types in Iexplorer.exe. How do I check that? I don't understand the procedure for that part.

ppmint--To (re)associate those graphic file types with IE, find a file of each type (.jpg, .gif, etc.), hold down the Shift key and right click on the file, click "Open With... ", scroll to iexplore, highlight, check box at bottom "Always use this program... ", click OK. Repeat this for each of the other file types.
If that does not solve the problem, more ideas

The simplest is to be sure you have cleaned out your cache (Temporary Internet Files).

    I doesn't work?!!?

Thank you for the suggestion, but I tried the shift right click thing & I get the same menu that appears when you just right click the item. It says open link, open link in another window, etc. Nothing that says "open with" and that menu doesn't come up if I try the open link options. Will try the link you suggested instead.

    Already tried that link

No results from that link. I downloaded the program that they had listed & installed it, but no good.

What is SmartBlock? Is it some form of content filter? Have you tried disabling it?

    Smartblock is a internet filter

It is an internet filter for my children since they like to sneak into forbidden areas when they have a babysitter. Anyway, do I have to uninstall it to find out if it is the culprit? I have exited out of it & it made no difference. I hate to have to start all over again if it's not.

    re: Checking File Associations

    O.k.
Go to Start->Programs->windows explorer->click Tools along the top bar and select Folder Options
    Then select File types
Scroll through the registered file types until you get to gif - Click on it once- make sure that beside "Opens With" is IEXPLORE
Do the same for JPEG image.

If it is not IEXPLORE click edit then click edit again under the actions box then beside " the application used to perform action" box click the browse button then point it to the iexplore.exe file or type the path in the box if you know it.

    Hope this helps!

The jpg & gif files were fine

Thank you. I found it right away. Both were assigned to iexplorer.exe. Maybe I'm looking for a different type. Some pictures are fine, but the ones that seem to be a problem are the "click here to go to.... ", or "to play.....game ", or in a pop-up window. For example, when I place an order an instant win game pops up on the screen, but instead of the game loading, I get the little square with the mulit-colored blocks or a red x. Are they a different type of picture? Sorry I have so little knowledge :(

Generally the pictures on webpages are either gif or jpg extensions. When you performed the last step did you make sure that no other programs were associated with either the JPEG image or Gif. I was having the problem for a while but the culprit on my machine seemed to be that Netscape (which I also use) was set as my default browser and HTML editor. As soon as I changed those things everything seemed to work o.k. I must say though, if I first go on the internet with netscape, if I then open up IE6 the problem seems to return.
I know this was suggested but did you clear all your temporary internet files.
Open IE then click on tools->internet options->click the delete files button and then when the box comes up check the "delete all offline content" as well.
You could also try running a repair on IE. Open up your control panel then double click the add/remove programs icon. Scroll down to Microsoft IE6 and then click the add/remove button- you will have the option to run a repair. Do it and then reboot your machine.

    Hope this helps!!!!!

    No luck

Whew!! OK Here's what I did. First I double checked the jpeg files & gif files. Once there I clicked on edit to check if anything else was listed which there wasn't. There were two jpeg files but both were set for internet explorer. Next I did the internet tools delete files & checked the offline content box. Then did the add/remove program thing and told it to repair the program & rebooted the computer. It still doesn't work. Here's an example of what I'm dealing with. I try to get into an online game on yahoo and when I click for the "room" I just get the little white box with multi-colored things in it. I did note that there is also a folder marked Internet Explorer 4 in the program file when I was exploring. Also, IE6 was listed as "Microsoft Inernet Explorer 6 SP1 and internet tools ". When I boot up the computer, I get a message that IE couldn't update and to check my connection and try again. (?) I wonder if I should just remove it & start over!! :(
