My laptop was updated to Windows 10 1809 in December. My desktop which is a newer PC still has not gone beyond 1803. Both are x64-based Systems. Any ideas what the delay might be for the desktop?

Because of problems with this update, MS is slow in giving out more updates unless they are sure it will work for your system.
I guess they are checking your system every so often and making changes to the update. I my office only 1 computer was update, the others are still waiting. You could do a manual download of version 1809 and install it, but you might run into problems and then you got a mess on your hands. my recommendation would be to wait till it downloads by itself

    According to MS:

“We are taking a more measured approach with the October Update, slowing our rollout to more carefully study device health data. We will offer the October Update to users via Windows Update when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience,” John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, explains.

“If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved.”

Even then the update could fail.

Hi jshaw42. You can always manually update your system to the latest build of Windows 10 by using this link, Download Windows 10.

If your computer is not getting updated to latest version automatically, I would strongly recommend against forcing it to. Microsoft is checking for a host of things on the system & would offer update only if everything checks out. You might run into problems if you force the update.
I have 4 desktops & 2 laptops. Only one desktop has received the update. All the rest are on previous version.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. But, no one has clearly defined why it is taking soooo long.

Again, why has my laptop (which was purchased before the desktop) updated and the desktop has not. Both are x64-based Systems and both are HP. Does the hard drive or chip used have any affect?

Thanks, Sven. But that is merely a nice publicity response.

There has obviously been a tardy attitude by 3rd. party suppliers to update their units to W10 requirements and this has caused many problems during the last couple of years when MS release a cumulative update - hence the reasons quoted in Post #3.
Just to example your HP comps indicates that HP are weighing up producing hardware/software for earlier models or just put the $'s into new releases.
HP like all computer manufacturers would sooner sell new models than spend huge amounts on developing updates for the older ones when the entire industry is moving forward at such a rate.
If your HP comp that has upgraded to 1809 OK I can sympathize with you as my HP 1000 Notebook (circa 2013) is still running 1803! ;)
Will I get 1809 - who knows - it still works fine for me.
