    Need some help.

OS is now that "dog" (I'm being polite !" Windows ME.

It is on a small partition "C "

    *********************************

Got a new Windows XP Pro CD.

Installed it - my drive "C" is too small - it gave me a choice.

So, we selected the much bigger Drive "D ".

    It did not complete.

    *************************************

What I want to do is "UPDATE" ME to Windows XP Pro.

All I get is a choice to do new installation.

    *************************************

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I would suggest you backup your data to cd and delete the partitions, then create new ones the proper size and do a clean install. Upgrade, from ME, is not recommended by anyone that I know of. It's just not compatible with other windows OS's.

Me -> XP is not supported by Microsoft

I have tried it at various times to see what happens and have an approximately 50% success rate - not good odds !

As already stated: Backup and start from scratch

    Hello AndyO,

*Me -> XP is not supported by Microsoft*

No. MS DOC on what OSes can be upgraded to XP and what can't be http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/matrix.asp

    Dave,

*Upgrade, from ME, is not recommended by anyone that I know of.* Except MS :)

*It's just not compatible with other windows OS's.*

    A little over-wrought, I think.

The problem in this thread is quite specific and seems not to have anything to do with whether this is ME or 98 for that matter.

I agree that "clean" installs in the end are better anyway, but there is a difference of opinion on that, with people on one side or the other. Certainly if trying to solve an "unstable" OS problem, upgrading is not the way to go.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello jbarker,

    * What I want to do is "UPDATE" ME to Windows XP Pro.

Can't upgrade because of the small partition size and XP's install wanted to do a "clean" install on D. If that would have worked, the end result would have been a dual boot installation, something that you wouldn't want anyway, I think.

    Follow Dave's advice.

Since you have ME, the easiest way is to copy FDISK.EXE to a floppy and use it to create partitions and wipe out the current ME installation off C - perhaps you've made a emergency boot floppy for ME, FDISK.EXE is on it.

Another way is to use the XP installation disc to the the job. Have to pay attention to the options and responese: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

If the C drive is too small - as opposed to a partition on C, than clean off C and install to D.

My XP is on D - I've got ME on C.

How big is C? 10 gigs should be more than enough. If its less than that, start thinking about replacing the C drive.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles,

I stand corrected, and retract the statements you pointed out. Thank you! :) I went on various articles, and testimonials from folks that have done the upgrade from ME to XP. Quote from one concerning upgrades, The UltraTech Knowledebase Viewer.
After I first read that, which was while contemplating doing such an upgrade, I dug around a bit and found that many people experience multiple problems with that route. Since then I have it stuck in my head that it's a nono, and won't recommend it. I will in the future modify my reasons for not doing so. ;)

Thanks - not worth the effort.

Just got a big old drive and junked the old.

    Installed all from beginning.

We admit it was a lot of trouble - but it works much better than ME.
