Hello everybody. I use Absolute Uninstaller instead of Windows Add/Remove. I recently found 2 from Microsoft that are a puzzle to me. They were installed as part of the OEM disk for XP Home with SP3. The programs are Microsoft Internationalized Domain Names Mitigation API and Microsoft National Language Support Downlevel API. Absolute Uninstaller found them but they do NOT show up in Windows Add/Remove. Try to remove and they come up with a list of programs that "may not work properly if .... is removed ". What are they good for?

    Hi hrlow2,

Part of IE7 package as default, or an update. Used to prevent a security issue where Unicode characters in URL's could be used to attack IE. (anti philshing, <-boy I hope I spelled that correctly). Uninstalling this will break IE7. :)

    Microsoft description:

Watch what your doing? Sounds like your using an unistall program with high risk possibilities. Many things are not in add/remove because they are not meant to be uninstalled as separate appi's but are actually part of and bulit into larger programs. You try to unistall many of the things listed in the registry and you risk a system or application throwing fits.

hello goddez1. Did Google search on both, but jargon was over my head. Knew they weren't there on IE6 that I could remember. (And no l in phishing). Could I safely rollback to IE6? Going off track here, but if your avatar is an actual photo shot, then your name fits(smiling & winking).

    Hi again,

If not using xpsp3, I suppose you could rollback or uninstall ie7 to ie6. Off the top of my head, I don't know the procedural hoops you'd have to jump through, though.

You may be trading one IE issue for another as pointed out by this mskb article:
Cannot view a web page using IDN and ie6
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842848

Version downgrade seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to eliminate what is meant to be a security upgrade. That coupled with the web surf risks of site redirects, hijacking, spoofed sites (similar to "people identity theft" except it's site url theft), why would you want to do this? Besides how could you get along without "tabbed" browsing? I love my tabs...;)

Are you having problems with IE7? if so, perhaps a post in IE forum on any issues your currently having, can be resolved. I can't believe all this is because your solely irked by an add/remove peeve or issue.

    ----------------------------------
 Thank you for the compliment. Yes that's my picture, about 5 years ago. Add a wrinkle or two and hair color de jour and it's still me.

hello again goddez1. Not really irked, more like curious about them. Have no problems with IE7. Beta of IE8, thats a different story. Tried it and could not even access Windows Updates page.Immediately rolled back to 7. (5-6 years wouldn't make much difference).

Ah..I see now. Using the old double edged sword of curiosity. Wisely, I might add, by researching or "Looking Before You Leap ", at least in this case. Beta's, however, are on another higher plane level for the curious. They often fall into the "Curiosity Killed The Cat" category.

Did the explanations help you at all in understanding "Internationalized Domain Names Mitigation API ". If not, I could try to simplify or degeek this, based on my understanding of which I'm making no claims to be 100% correct. I am definitely not an IT nor geek. Just an average home user who's own curiosity has bitten me in the butt a time or two.

    -------------------
5-6 years may not make much difference but half inch squared 2D and 5'5" 3D would, trust me.

me again. no need to "de-geekify" those. Since they aren't doing any harm, I'll just live with it. I may be old, but I'm not dead yet, and curiosity isn't going to do it either. I don't believe that last either.
