When running System Tools/Disk Defragmenter I note that my Unmovable Files load had grown to maybe as much as 5%, while it used to be a much smaller level. Does anybody know what kind of files Windows XP' defragmenter flags as Unmovable - and why this should have grown to such a relatively high level on my machine?

Running Win XP Pro SP2 - fully up to date, usual firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware software and Firefox 2 browser.

The files are "system" files that are in use.

    Hello oserdavid,

The in use files that Steve refered to are:

The page file - known as Virtual Memory or swap file and can get fragmented.

MFT (NTFS drives only), is your hard drive's table of contents. As you add more files to your drive, the MFT gets filled up; once it's full, it grows, and that's when it starts getting fragmented.

Discussion on the page file: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=59088

    Regards - Charles

Defragment system files, including paging files and the registry hives:

    Microsoft/Sysinternals freeware PageDefrag:

The MFT should rarely need to be defragmented. To do so, either purchase a full blown defragmentation utility such as Raxco Perfect Disk, Diskeeper, or O & O defragmenter. You can use a trial of the latter to do the defragmentation at boot time of your MTF and that may suffice you for a long time: http://www.oo-software.com/en/download/
